Earlier this summer, my parents (mom, actuallly. My dad let her buy whatever she wanted for her birthday) finally succumbed (sp?) and bought us (me and little brother) a trampoline in early June. All summer, me and Matt have been on and off of that thing, constantly. Those things are loads of fun. And, of course, all summer I've been attempting flips. Repeatedly, I've come close to landing a front flip.

At camp, every night we'd get to go in the pool for an hour. EVERY NIGHT, me and 6 other boys did NOTHING BUT FRONT FLIPS off the diving board. So I came back from camp, still couldn't land a front flip. Thursday night, I go outside with Matt and his friend. This time I try something different (tuck my legs in a bit further) and LAND A FRONT FLIP. Now, when I say land, I mean standing STRAIGHT UP, and not balancing on my hands. I litterally spun, shot my legs out, and was standing 100% straight up.

So for athletics this summer, I've been doing front flips on our trampoline all summer. We have 1 or 2 trees with a branch low enough that I can climb them, but virtually all the trees in our forest are too tall to consider climbing. I'd like to play some frisbee/Ultimate but there's no one around to play frisbee with (my brother's a lazy slob, "It's too hot out.") and no where near enough people to play Ultimate. Hopefully during the school year I can get my friends to bring a frisbee to school and we'll get some Ultimate games going on..

So, for athletic things what do you do, especially during the summer? And I don't mean organized sports, I mean just going out and doing something.
I had a blog. It sucked.

...nothing?

I wish I had a trampoline though. :(

Typically, I'll run 2-3 miles (not jog, run). Every other day I jump rope for 15 minutes and lift free weights to tone up. I don't have the body type that bulks up, so I don't even try anymore.

I often engage in various games of basketball at the local gym (I'm 6'4, 190lbs).

I play paintball every month or so, as well as go on at least a 5 mile hike each month.

I am also learning how to dance. I'm learning to waltz and tango.

[As well as various night-time cardio vascular activities]

Basically just a kick about in the park every now and then. I'm not the most active of people, although I'm not exactly unhealthy either (I walk a lot).

I dance haha

good job, I never learned how to front tuck
I got my back tuck and aerial though .. finally haha :)

n I play basketball and run long distances through cities because I am often unaware of meeting times and notice that the bus might leave without me 5 minutes before that time

I'll go play soccer and basketball at the park. It's easy to find a pick upgame around here.

I biked 4 miles both yesterday and today. I should start running again to get ready for cross country and skiing, too. Oh right, I went on a 10.8 mile hike with packs with some friends last month.
DO NOT WANT.

I mountainbike as much as possible, although it's an on/off relationship between actually riding it and finding a new part I've managed to wear out or wreck.
2006-08-05, 4:49 PM #10
I never was very athletic-- too clumsy and uncoordinated.
2006-08-05, 4:51 PM #11
Atleast now you have a valid excuse, Page.

I walk a few miles now and then. Mainly because the bus service is mildly screwed at the moment.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Ultimate frisbee any chance I get.

Zloc it's all about the set. Reach up before you flip, and delay your tucking in. Now that you've got a single, go for a half or full twist, or if you've got hair on your peaches go for a double front.
2006-08-05, 5:57 PM #15
Twist? Elaborate.

And I'm too big of a pussy to try a backflip. I tried one and landed on my neck. Wasn't fun. But I may try one if I can see someone do one correctly and get the form down.

And I don't think I'm NEAR fast enough on my spinning for a double front, Ring. I did over-rotate WAAAAAAAAAAY too far once though, as in I almost landed on my face.
I had a blog. It sucked.

aren't back flips safer than forward ones? the dangerous part is over with sooner.

I usually cycle around a couple times a week. Mostly on my mountainbike, but occasionally on my road bike (yes, with the lycra gear) :psyduck:

And I bought a punch bag a few weeks ago. Have been punching it most evenings. Lots of fun :ninja: I probably look like an idiot doing it though. Lucky it's in the garage and no-one can see me :D

I'd swim a mile when I had time.
2006-08-05, 7:05 PM #21
Back flips are also "easier" than front flips, or so says my dad.

Speaking of my dad, I saw this 45 year old man who acts like he's about 55 and starting to decay land a back flip a few weeks ago. Yeah, he's REEEEEALLY old when he can still land a backflip.

not safer, but easier

front tucks are hard to get because they seem less scary and so you never get that torque out of yourself that you need

I think my problem with backflips is I jump backwards instead of up. When doing a backflip, do you tuck your legs in like a front flip?
I had a blog. It sucked.
2006-08-05, 7:53 PM #24
yes

When you're doing a front flip, tuck your head in also. Otherwise you might slip one day and die.

2006-08-05, 7:59 PM #25
if you want to do a back tuck tuck your legs
if you want to do a back layout dont tuck your legs

The tuck helps a lot though, so don't learn by starting with layouts

Also -- do NOT (!!!!!!) tuck your head to your chin when you try a backflip of any kind

if you do, you're not going to make it over on time and you will land on the back of your head/neck while it is tucked and snap your spinal chord

I actually have a video of this but it makes me sad and afraid so I'm not going to dig it up and post it

Make sure you look BACK with your head (however scary it is) and try to spot the ground as soon as you start the rotation

Parkour, taekwondo, weight training (It's complicated. It's a lot like what Yoda does to Luke in EP: V, with the sitting on the back while Luke does stuff. Except my Yoda is a 250lb black man.), ultimate frisbee, running.

How do you know Yoda didn't weigh 250lbs? :p :D

My exercise includes going to the bathroom, and getting my lunch.

Then again, that's all I'm allowed to do until this damn wound heals.

But as soon as I am healed up, I am going on a serious exercise.

i've been doing my workouts for running track in college. i've also been cycling a fair amount, its fun stuff.
yay for not posting much ever

Parkour, baby. Of course, that just means that I jump over, on, or under anything that looks fun. I really need to start doing it a bit more seriously and bigger.
I also skateboard. I spent most of my summer at my local skatepark learning to skate vert. (So much fun!) I'll also join in any game that anyone happens to be playing. (Unless it's soccer with non-Americans. They're too intense about it)

Martial arts every week, and then basketball and ultimate whenever I get the chance.
Life is beautiful.
2006-08-06, 12:20 PM #35
I'm this Martial Arts geek, so every week i go out like 10 times to practice my Kempo (mix of kung fu, founded in indonesia (SP?) in 1960 by faulhaber) I also do some Nunchaku-do, just bought some nunchaku's, my friend does it, and I like it. So now and then I did use to jog 3 kilometers (don't know how many miles) every day. I don't do it so often anymore, maybe this evening is a good time to start again ;)

Nothing more, nothing less

Wait wait... a front flip on a trampoline is a freaking piece of cake. front flip on ground is hard. but trampoline? j00 = nubtr0n lol. Anyway though, yeah, backflips are safer and easier (on solid ground).
2006-08-06, 1:30 PM #37
The flip is easy, but landing them takes somewhat more skill.

Forgot about my own athletics: I just quit gymnastics after about 10 years of it, but I'm still trying to work out. I'm kind of turned on to this parkour thing you're talking about.
