[19:55] <Aglar> i just found a bug in my carpet that's really weird looking
[19:55] <Aglar> it's about 1 cm long, silver in color, and sort of slithers when it moves

Sounds like silverfish to me. They look like a weird slithery drop of mercury sliding across your floor.

Eat it.

That's exactly what it looked like. That was the first thing that popped into my head (had never seen one before, just knew there was something called silverfish), so I wikipedia'd it and the image in the article looks nothing like that. Maybe it was a picture of an adult and this was a baby or something, because stuff I've read says they're usually 1/2-1" long, this was much smaller.

Should I be concerned about this (like, tell my parents, call an exterminator, etc), or is seeing one not that big a deal (just like seeing a spider or centipede every now and then)?

Bedbugs are coming back, now that the DDT is wearing off. Was it a bedbug?

It's probably a silverfish. That image in wiki doesn't match most of those that I've seen, they're usually smaller and actually silverish.

If it's a silverfish then don't worry about it.

Silverfish are very common and harmless to humans. They love wallpaper glue, though, and can eventually bring down your wallpaper, but that's really rare.

Just squish it.

they'll eat through regular paper and cardboard, though. that's where I usually find them, is around cardboard boxes sitting on the ground.

Never seen one in my life. They look like the little Goa'uld killing devices Machello invented.

We have silverfish too. Call some bug people and have them spray your house or something.

Or call some bug people who know stuff about bugs (read: not massassi) and ask them for their professional opinion and advice.

If it's a silverfish, don't call an exterminator... that's like bringing a nuke to a wrestling match >.>

They take forever to do any damage (our house has had them for decades), they're harmless to humans, and as Wikipedia points out, they're easy to bait.

Hah hah, bugs suck at evolution.

Bugs are cute.
2006-08-07, 9:55 PM #22
Chances are you probably won't see very many more of them unless you bait them. They don't make themselves known very much. I saw maybe 3 or 4 in the course of 20 years at my old house, and they are pretty harmless, albeit very weird looking.

i think its a silver fish. I've seen bugs like that all the time. does it have pinchers on its backend? if so I think that's what it is
2006-08-07, 10:02 PM #24
Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

I've heard certain moths had changed their color from the brown of a tree to dark brown (due to more pollution on tree bark).

What is it with you and bugs? Didn't you just make another thread about a bug? Become an entemologist already...

Dude, In Holland, these things are the ultimate PEST, I hate 'm, you won't have much trouble with them but they are, kinda disgusting and they are everywhere. For you, I hope that you only had one in your house. If there are more, there are thousands to milions of them underneath your house. Have a nice day :D

P.S. Don't bother killing one ;), anytime I kill one in the bathroom, they return with 10 to eat their squished friend

It's not a bug. It's a feature!
Sorry for the lousy German

You're thinking of a species in England that had two variations, black with white spots, and white with black spots. During the industrial revolution in England, the trees blackened from all the coal dust in the air, making the white moths stick out like a sore thumb. They were pretty much sitting ducks in the spots where they once were almost invisible. This has nothing to do with evolution--but rather, man ****ing over the natural balance of nature.

At first I was confused, but you're right, I made one about mayflies a couple months ago. *shrug* When you want something identified and don't know where to start, there's no better place than message boards to ask.

Beats me, I was too freaked out by the fact that a droplet of solder was squirming away to poke it.
