ForumsDiscussion Forum → ATI becomes AMD?
ATI becomes AMD?

I know it's old news, that AMD bought ATI. What is new is that AMD wants to ditch the ATI brand.
They want to keep the other brands, like Radeon and Crossfire but I guess future graphics cards will be sold as AMD Radeons or whatever.

I think this is a bad move. ATI is a well established brand at least in the mind of gamers. If AMD wants to rival Intel in the integrated graphics market I think it would be better if they just keep the ATI name for their gaming cards and put the AMD logo on the integrated cards.

I only have German source, so go find your own.
Sorry for the lousy German

I don't think that the name will make much of a difference. In the end it will all come down to marketing and performance.

Well, but the name is a large part of marketing.

Agreed. If it were other markets I would think it might make a difference, but in a market where there are really only two players, as long as the boxes at Best Buy still say Radeon on them, I don't see it making a difference. The type of people who generally install their own video cards will know that AMD = ATI. I'm curious to see how this affects venders that sell desktops and notebooks with ATI products and Intel processors (e.g. Apple).

It's just a rumor at the moment. Nothing solid.

Ah, you're right. http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/91652/amd-stays-hand-over-ati-brand-axe.html

Though even the Marketing Manager of AMD Europe said they'd ditch the ATI brand.

ATI didn't make all of their cards anyway. They developed the technology and others made some of the cards.

ATI made a great number of the cards though, and they were really good quality and service too (warranties were excellent, RMAs were fast, etc).

NVidia doesn't make ANY of their own cards.

And ATI stopped making their own cards, iirc. Why does it matter if nVidia produces their own cards (especially when they produce almost all of their own chipsets for TVs, etc which is where their biggest amount of money comes from anyways) if their technology is still competitive with ATI's? So ATI sells cards. Chaintech is an excellent nVidia-centric corporation, as is Asus, etc. It doesn't matter.

And he said they didn't make all of their cards, not any of their cards. They didn't even make most of them.
