I caught a ______ yesterday (kyle90 takes on the reptiles and amphibians)

First, the reptile. I was moving some wood around in our woodpile when I came upon this guy:

Just a common garter snake; probably about 50 cm long. My dog was afraid of it, whereas my one cat wanted to be its friend. It smelled bad.

And next we have the amphibian:

Not entirely sure what kind of salamander this is, but he was found in some old hay at the barn; nowhere near water, which I thought was unusual. His tail was covered in mud for some reason.

My original plan was to put them in a cage together and have an epic duel to the death, but unfortunately this never happened. Mostly because I had released the snake before I found the salamander.

They do make tasty spagetti noodles. Add meat balls and chunky tomato sauce and you've got a meal.

The snake would've won hands down, due to its agility, and the fact that the salamander doesn't have any armor! It only has a fleshy epidermis, while the snake has armor scales.

The smell of the garter snake is a natural defense mechanism, much like a skunk's spray. Adult salamanders often live far from water; all they need is to stay moist and have access to water for breeding.
Why do the heathens rage behind the firehouse?

All snakes bite. Some just aren't poisonous.
