The old technology thread.

Here's a comparison of two batteries used by two camcorders I have.

Left one is one from 2003 (with a lifespan of more than 5 hours between charges) and the other one is from around 1990 (with a lifespan of around 1 hr). Nothing really fascinating, just an interesting sight.

What pieces (functional or not) of old technology do you have sitting around your house? I know a handful of people here have old computers. Pictures?

I've got a pretty old VCR player on my wardrobe. And joysticks and other peripherals from way back when.

We had an NES up until a few years ago, same with an old IBM Win 3.1 machine.

Seriously, though, I have this old voltmeter that uses vacuum tubes:

An old record player. I got it from my grandmother. I couldn't try it, yet, because I need an adaptor to connect it to my receiver.

What about the tools that made the wheel?

The first wheel was a really round rock. No tools required.

That's a tiny camcorder battery, lol. Wish I still had our old camcorder around to show you how massive its battery was. It was one of the first JVC consumer camcorders, and you had to carry around the VCR with it in a case to record to standard VHS tapes. It had a massive battery that was probably about a foot long, few inches wide, and an inch or more thick.

hrm. this old tube preamp from the 80's. and asides from that, nothing much really, a beat up '79 ludwig drum doesn't count as much technology...

I wish I had a pic of it but I have the oldest gaming console ever at my parents place. PONG.

Basically just a console you plug into the TV, switch on and play pong using the two knobs on it to move your paddle. IT HAD MULTIPLAYER TOO!

I might post a complete 'inventory', which may or may not include images, later... since 90% of the old stuff is in the basement.

-An old sewing machine (I think it was my great-grandmother's)

-rather retro VCR (the bulky kind with the remote control you have to plug in)

-a 'portable' television (what makes it portable is the fact it has a handle on the top... thats just about it... uses vaccuum tubes.... one of the tubes is blown, need replacement)

-a Sears and Robock Super-8 camera (still works............... i think)

-an Apple IIc (missing one or more of its disks...)

-loads of those old 5.25 in floppies....

-a 'portable' Reminton manual typewriter (one of my personal favorites)

-stereo with record player, cassette, 8-track and AM/FM radio

-several of those crank drill things

As of now, I'm too lazy to go down to the basement... :o

Forget how old it is. Can't be arsed to Google it. Used to run slowly, but nicely enough. Battery is completely dead, so it always needed to be plugged in. Now it fails to boot up at all because the CMOS battery or some such is also dead now. So basically it's a nice paperweight. I could probably go find a new battery, but really, for a hulking old piece of crap like this, why bother?

I call it Leela. My mom bought it sometime in October 1995, shortly after they came out. It's mine now. 33Mhz, 500 mb hard drive, 8 mb of ram, OS 7.5.something. The trackpad usually hates me. I attribute that to it just being an old trackpad in terms of technology since newer trackpads like me. The onboard battery is fun. I get about 5 seconds of battery life. Doesn't matter how many times I recondition the battery, or how long I let it charge, the battery is just shot. I still use it fairly often though despite the fact it's old and completely obsolete.

The oldest piece of technology I have with me is my NES. It still works great, though the plastic housing of the power adapter is kind of cracked and is now held together with duct tape.

At my parents house I have an old 386SX that still works well, despite the fact that it ate two hard drives. It has one in there now, with Windows 95 even, and it manages to run that without choking and dying.

Megahertz. Heinrich Hertz is the name of a man much smarter than you or I, which means that he (like Nikolai Tesla, Isaac Newton, James Watt, Georg Ohm, Charles-Augustin Coulomb, Andre-Marie Ampere, and others) has a standard unit of measurement named after him. Mega is the metric prefix meaning x10^6, or one million.

Mega Hertz. Megahertz. The proper abbreviation for Mega is a capital letter M. The proper abbreviation for Hertz is Hz. Not GZ, because there is no letter 'G' in the name Hertz.

MHz means megahertz, or one million oscillations per second. MGZ means you do not have an education. This isn't the first time I've mentioned this to you, either, so it also means you are deliberately ignorant and obtuse. I strongly suggest making more of an effort to correct these shortcomings..

QFBTWIWGTS.

Or something very similar.

Somewhere at my parent's house we've got a knackered old 486 which was Police Quest-tastic.

I've got a Sega Megadrive with loads of good games which gets as much play as my new Nintendo DS Lite. I love Super Street Fighter 2.

Besides that, there's nothing particularly old in our new house, but I'm sure I could find something ancient and still functioning at my parents' house (probably gathering dust under my bed!).

I got a NES with games I love. But because of the flawed design of loading cartridges, now I only get the blinking red light of despair.
