thoughts on enunciation

I made a post on my Appeal thread that made me think of this idea as a thread of its own.

1) How good do you think your enunciation is?

2) What words, sounds, etc. do you like saying the least? The best?

And to answer my own questions:

1) I think my enunciation sucks, and it's not entirely unfounded. Setting aside the dislike for my own voice (which is common for a lot of people), I've always felt that I don't always speak clearly. Part of it is laziness, part of it is because I didn't learn to speak until a later age, and when I did, I needed to go to a speech counselor for a while, part of it... who knows. Apparently it's not terrible or anything, because people that I've talked to say they don't really notice it. I will continue to harbor my paranoia, however, so that I continue to try and keep my speaking understandable.

2) I find anything with an "R" and sometimes "L" sound to be difficult, so I don't like saying words like "world" or "really" or the like (not surprising, as I remember the "r" sound being one of the last things I apparently had problems with early in my life). In general, I don't like words or sounds that don't have clear, hard sounds in them. I like words like "split" and words in general I can pronounce more theatrically ("cellar door" in this case works). And, of course, I like anything that makes me sound less like a dork and more like a respectable voice (sound only... the content of what I'm speaking will be dork-material all over :D).

So share your thoughts people. This would be the ideal thread to post voice clips.

I talk clearly an enunciate well, I just may not speak loudly. Part of that is because I expect people to have better hearing, but since everyone these days has a ****ing iPod, nearly everyone has hearing issues :P

As far as sounds I like/dislike? I dunno, maybe the 'r' when trying to speak German or what little Spanish I still know. I always say it flat, like English. None of English bothers me (other than the language itself, but that's a different rant), and I only really trip up if I'm thinking too far ahead (which is common).

FTW.

Also, I think it's enunciation. Just for the record.

You're right. I suck at spelling too, obviously. v_v I go change my thread title now...

And by spelling I mean spelling the right word. We're talking about pronunciation here, not announcing things. I am so smart. I am so smart. S-M-R-T...

EDIT: Hmm.. guess I can't change my own thread title. Strange. Vinny did it though. Thanks man!

And oh man, please! No pronounciation of "massassi" tangents!

...besides, at least most of you aren't pronouncing it "MASS-ah-see" like SOME Maryland Massassians...

eh, I don't have too many enunciation problems, though that's probably thanks in part to voice teachers drilling me. So I can pretty much pronounce "r"s in any language (with a dramatic flair if necessary) though I'm having issues with German since I just started my first german piece recently and it's not like any of th eromantic languages I've been singing in. It'll take some time.

I do have days when I just can't seem to spit anything out though. kind of sucks, it's hard to make a witty comeback or smart aleck remarks when I acn't spit the words out, so thankfully that's not too common.

Well, I get people not hearing what I say first time I say something like once a week, so I guess I have some problem or their ears suck.

Then again, I couldn't understand a NYC burger place clerk at the first time so I asked "WHAT"

I tend to mumble, and trip over my own words when talking in public.

This doesn't really have to do with enunciation, but I speak monotonously, especially when I speak English. I've been in some English voice chats (such as Paltalk) and people there are like "Why is there no emotion in your voice?"
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I'd appreciate it if you all stop butchering the English language.

Thank you.

enunciation is alright if the person has a serious problem and just wants to die. :D

I butcher speech. I end up trying to say something and getting the sounds all crazy mixed up. Or something.

I enunciate just fine. Though I could never get the sound of the rolling rs in Spanish right.

Interestingly enough when I was little, it was suggested to my parents by a teacher that I needed speech therapy. I don't think the teacher understood that I was Polish and had very little experience with the English language. (This was in pre-school, kindergarten era; we moved to the States when I was 3).

I had a bit of a lisp when I was a kid, but I've got that fixed. My problem is really that I just don't like to talk, so I mumble or speak quietly. And when I do want to talk it takes me forever to figure out how to phrase what I want to say.

And when I'm on stage I tend to go too fast and mush my words together.

I have been told I have near perfect enunciation, except that my f's and th's are basically identical. Apparently it's exta frustrating because I'm good at everything else.
Honestly I've been getting a bit touchy about my f's and th's, cuz no matter how much I try I still suck at them ><

It's easy. 'th' is a voiceless dental fricative, while 'f' is a voiceless labio-dental fricative. Nothing could be simpler. :D

I'm all about labio-dental fricative.

Well, acoustically, voiceless dental and labio-dental fricatives sound almost exactly the same, so you really shouldn't feel to bad about people not being able to tell the difference. If we weren't looking at people while they talked (and couldn't guess by the word they were saying) I'd guess we'd guess the wrong one almost as often as the right one.

And, 'th' can be a voiced fricative, too...

to lie and manipulate, your enunciation needs to be spot-on.

But if he's mixing it up with 'f', it's obviously the voiceless version of it.
