I work for United Space Alliance which is a contractor for NASA. We are working on a project right now called record retention which is the storing of old magnetic tape reels like this so I guess my job has meaning!

you do realize that with all the magnetic tape NASA has, it is quite easy to loose stuff. and this is just the master tapes, i am sure there are probably lots of first and second generation copies around, the master is just wanted for the sake of history. ( I mean, even old tv studios can have troiuble keeping track of their old tapes.)
