System Shock 2
2006-08-15, 8:07 PM #1
So I had some extra money lieing around today, and though "Hey, i'll hop on over to best-buy!" and discovered they had system shock 2 in the bargain bin. Now, I know you are all going to hate me for this, but until today I have never, ever played any of the system shock games. So, I decided to pick it up.

I have only two things to say about this game.

Jesus. Christ.

Is it possible you can make a game any creepier then this? Right now in my game, I am hiding in a room in the crew sector trying to find the doctor, while there are a few hybrids walking around outside because of a security alert I managed to trip off while hacking into a computer. I think I have like 6 bullets left in my pistol. I'm saving those for security camera's, so all I have is a wrench. :ninja:

But yeah, this game is totally awesome. Discuss.

edit: those GODDAMN MONKEYS!

The Cradle level in Thief 3 might actually be creepier, but it's not an entire game.

I remember playing the System Shock 2 demo years ago. I was running around, without a gun or weapon, trying to well... find something. Finally I enter some sort of storage room and find a gun. I'm like... "awesome!"

Turn around to see a hybrid right up in my face with its ugliness.

I fell off my chair. :p

Make sure you've downloaded the improved models and texture packs!

I love the system shock series.

Shodan is the BEST VILLIAN EVER! PERIOD!

To this day, the once innocent squeaks of monkeys still sends a shiver down my spine.

Man, that game was amazing, especially that level. I love the flashback sequences and the enemies... incredible level.

System Shock 2 is a classic. I can't wait for Bioshock.

Conserve your ammo. Practice with timing your spanner hits because you will NEVER have enough ammo.

Did I mention you should conserve your ammo?

Also the more you use your weapons the more they degrade and require fixing/will jam when you need them the most.

Use the spanner!

Only ever played the demo. Seemed like quite a fun game at the time, but I never got around to picking it up. Probably because when it came out I didn't have a job or any money :o

System shock 2 is legally free now. I got stuck, but just too lazy to get unstuck and not as thrilling as i hoped. I'm assuming though the really creepy stuff comes later on.

I played through it last time around 2001, I should play it again one of these days with those high-res packs.

I've never been able to find this game anywhere except amazon and e-bay, and even then for only about $20 and up... which seems like too much. Is it really worth the money?

Or, you can invest in Agility and Energy weapons and get the Laser Rapier (awesome weapon, basically a lightsaber) towards the end of engineering. or you can wait a lot longer, invest in Exotic weapons and research, and get the [name removed]. :ninja:

Either was, Martyn is right, conserve ammo, learn to love Mêlée weapons, and learn to horde everything you don’t immediately use.

I found the laser rapier extremely annoying, so I just stuck with my assault rifle. If you have ammo of all kinds and enough skills for repair, you shouldn't have much trouble.

I didn't get farther than Rickenbacker, where you go inside and the gravitational field's reversed . I probably should. It is an awesome game.

Gotta love the ninjas, too.

System Shock 2 is tied with Deus Ex and a few others on my list for the best game of all time.

You REALLY should download the complemented Rebirth mod (from strangebedfellows linked above) and the System Shock 2 Retexture mod (linked above). I would also suggest the new PSI amp model at strangebedfellows. There's another mod, I forget the name of it, but it's basically a set of bug fixes and gameplay balances. It's like an unofficial patch. Just look for it, it's not a long list.

Mods are one click installs if you download Zombie's SS2 Mod Manager. It's somewhere on strangebedfellows.
