For all those English people doing public exams, here's a thread to show off or commiserate the results for the AS/A2 levels (what the NEWTS in Harry Potter are based on...) which were released this morning.

So to whom it concerns. post your results, and what uni/course you're going to do:

A2 results:

Maths - A (598/600)
Chemistry - A (590/600)
Further Maths - A (586/600) [Technically 686/600 as I did one "spare" module in my own time)
Physics - A (577/600)
General Studies - A (570/600)

(Additional AS from last year: Latin - A (273/300))

I did not revise General Studies at all, and I got full marks on three of the papers, including a French paper, and I've not done any French for the past two years. Also, I got full marks in both Chemistry papers I did this summer, and in the longer of the two physics papers.

I guess this means Oxford (St. Edmund Hall), here I come. I'm going to do a 4-year Physics course. It amuses me that this subject was my lowest grade (in a real subject.)

I did really badly :o Suffice it to say, I missed an ABB offer by several grades (studying English Language, Psychology, and Sociology). However, I still got accepted into my first choice University :D

So, by the end of September I'll be off to the University of Liverpool to study Psychology.

At least you got in, and in the end that's what matters :D

Amen to that :D My heart sank when I saw my results, but one of my teachers got me to call the University. They were just like, "Yeah, you've been accepted...bye."

too be honest when I got my a-level results 4 years ago they weren't what I expected, however I still got accepted where I wanted to go, finished my degree with a 2.1 (4% off a first ggrr) and I'm now starting my PhD in particle physics in September, with full funding for the next 4 years :D

A-levels don't seem to count for all that much now, there were 5 or 6 people in my first year doing physics who got straight A's at a-level and who ended up dropping out after the first year.

Still, yoda, they are some impressive results, congratulations, enjoy oxford and livid, have fun at Liverpool, University is a blast :D

It looks like you actually made an effort to answer the questions in General Studies though.

The whole point of General Studies is to see if you can still get more than 50% whilst blindly guessing every multiple choice answer. Silly GoY

I hate you. I hate you all.

I've been running around trying to undo the mistake someone made of giving me an A-level early. So I come out with BCCC when I need ABC. And B'ham gets huffy. So my mum got whiny and they're going to reserve a place if, and only if, my school can prove that I can get an A in Maths. Which I can - the UMS comes to 507-ish. But if B'ham don't accept the marks or Edexcel don't change the grade, I still get the joys of clearing and mockery by my slightly more successful peers and people who thought I was going to do amazingly but found out I suck.

So I'm going to get drunk out of frustraton.

Wait, so I'm confused .. GoY are you not into college yet but entering soon? Or are these college exams to get into a specific program, or grad school "entrance" exams?

These are the grades required to get into University. They are the results of an exam taken at the end of sixth form college, where most pupils are 18 years old.

"modules"??

damn, education is pretty standardized over there huh
2006-08-17, 2:26 PM #15
A module is an broad topic area with an exam which generally takes about one term (semester?) to teach. The A-level is divided into six modules, three AS modules done in the first year of Sixth Form and three A2 modules done in the second year. The scores from all six of the modules are added together to determine the final overall score, and the overall grade is calculated based on this score.

Final results were:

English Literature: A
English Literature Advanced Extension Award: Merit
Geography: A
French: A
General Studies: A
History: B

I'm off to University College London to do English Literature - I was dead chuffed to get 120/120 on the final and only drop 18/600 on the entire course :) Got top marks on Geography B6 and General Studies B4 and B6 too :D

Edexcel screwed up Maths for my friend also - he's due to go to Oxford, but the Maths A-level was missing entirely from his sheet, they actually pulled it at my school before he even got there and had to discuss it with him. He has an A, it just isn't there. What with this, previous years and the hangman's noose incident (see the BBC news website) from recently on their website, they are in big trouble...

I think I've got it mostly sorted. It was more miscommunication than Edexcel's specific fault, but I should come out with an A in maths, B in physics, C in chemistry and further maths.

And that hangman thing? That seems like people being oversensitive.

So will you be sorted for uni now, Tony?

Well, B'ham have officially said "no", but someone's supposedly holding a place. I don't think anyone knows what's really happening.

Silly Engs, I got the results off me highers a week ago in the post. No silly going to school during the Summer for me. I'm also satisfied with my ABBB, although I buggered up English and I'm resitting it now out of choice. :(
nope.
