I'm taking a beginning black and white photography class and I need a SLR camera. I'm looking to spend close to $100 and am definitely interested in used prices. Any suggestions?

SLR's are somewhat expensive, but froogle has some kinda cheap ones
I think you'll need to either double or triple your price range to get anything decent

Good luck spending under 100 dollars. $200 is a bit more realistic.

You should try to find a Soviet spy camera. They are portable and nifty looking to boot. Not only a neat collectable but there are a number of them floating around the net for about $80 or so depending on where you get it.

Otherwize just go to a pawn shop.

SLR for $100? That's stretching it.

Isn't equipment provided on loan when taking the class?

lucked out and found my old Minolta SLR in the local classified ads. Paid around $150 but that included three lenses, shutter cable, tripod...

Do you know anyone who would loan out an old 35mm SLR?

pawn shops, ebay? local camera shop?

Even at cost, the SLR's in my store are like 3-400 minimum

i got my SLR for 30 bucks off ebay. slightly used and a somewhat older model, but when you do black and white in a dark room, i see no point in spending hundreds on your camera. i wouldnt spend anything over 60.

Inherited a Canon A-1 from my Grandfather almost a full year ago. Despite a few problems loading it (going from a full point-and-shoot automatic to an SLR isn't always the smartest idea), the pictures turned out fantastic. No idea how much they go for these days though.

Cazor- I took a photography class, and used my dad's old Nikon SLR. (He used to be a professional photographer) Needless to say, it was N.I.C.E.

The cameras the school had for everyone else to use were craptastic.

There is a big difference, both in ease of use and, really even the quality of the picture, between a crappy SLR and a good one.

Now, I don't advocate spending a bajillion dollars, but I think somewhere between 150 and 250 would be a good price range for an acceptable SLR.

Why are schools still using SLRs? The days when DSLRs couldn't compare have been gone for quite some time.

Digital SLR's cost a very pretty penny. In the $700 range. If the school is supplying them, film cameras are still cheaper.

There's something satisfyingly classic about using film SLR's. Kind of like vinyl records vs. CDs. :)
