wow, I didn't realise our dollar was higher then the US... WEEEE, buying stuff from the US is cheaper again! hasn't been like that since I was like... 10... ah, good times.

Anywho, I think i'll watch this thread, as I want a new computer as well and I want it to be able to play game likes Oblivion, half-life 2, F.E.A.R etc etc with really nice settings...

No. F-ing. Way. Will you be gaming nicely on $500 American. I tried. $600 American at the LEAST if you want good performance.
I had a blog. It sucked.

That's debatable (what are you going to be playing, and at what resolution?). Machines equivilant to mine are being sold now for $500CAD, and i can still get some decent performance in most games (Oblivion giving me the most trouble for obvious reasons, especially as i use native resolution for my LCD moniter).

:D

Anywho, i'd recommend using Tigerdirect.ca if we're talking Canadian dollars here. What specs are you running right now?

"What games?"

Depends. I dont NEED high omega wow graphics. Im all about gameplay.

As for specs, As long as it runs HL2 at atleast DECENT quality its good,

$700 computer (was $650, damn the refurbished parts not working!) and I run HL2 at almost 100% max (not playing AA all the way up, I believe), get over 50fps constantly (only drop was in gmod with 200 explosions on screen).

Oblivion, playing between medium - high (with VERY high above high) and I get between 20 - 40fps depending on how big the town is.

FarCry, MAX settings on EVERYTHING but resolution (1024xwhatever) and I only got 1 drop (and that was pretty random, but it lasted 10 seonds max I believe)

The only problem is, if you go with less than medium now, in a year I'm thinking you'll regret it. And I said exactly what you said, Tiberium. EXACTLY. "I don't need graphics, it's about gameplay"

Now, I'm not Jonsee, I'm not Yoshi, I'm not CM, but my limited computer knowledge (and a thread I made about building a $500 computer as opposed to $650) is telling me that you'll get low settings in most of these games, and it'll be outdated pretty soon.

I have an AMD 3000+, and I think that'll be the first thing I upgrade because it's starting to be the bare minimum. And that'll be your budget if you go with $500. The extra $100 - $150 will be worth it.

Oh, and let's not forget.

You'll need WIndows XP (OK, I admit, my parents bought it for me. My parents put out a significant amount of money for me to get this computer working, and I'm VERY thankful)

Well of course i will.

Plans have been made.....
2006-08-22, 7:02 PM #10
Ok fine 650 American...

What parts?
Be precise..
2006-08-22, 7:08 PM #11
This is what I have, save for mobo(Copy/Pasted from my thread). Only thing I can suggest is going not-refurbished, because both my refurb-parts showed up with some flaw.

And of course..you'll have to find these on tigerdirect. But the parts list, nonetheless.

Case $50
PSU - $33
Mobo - $64
Video Card I'm CERTAIN Yoshi suggested (forgot to add it to my wishlist) - $166
CPu - $94
1gb RAM - $79
250gb HDD - $75
DVD Burner - $36

Copy/Pasted onto a thing and saved...

Now just to rase 700 [50 for games]
2006-08-22, 7:23 PM #13
Don't go with that exact setup. Have Yoshi, Jonsee, CM, and all the other tech wizards in the tech forum look it over. And don't save just for this. Ask every now and again to see if there's better deals to get. Or look for yourself. Or just save up $650 and then ask what you should get.

DON'T stay concrete on that setup.

Good, but I'd get this MoBo instead. Also, I'd definitly plan on OCing the heck out of that CPU. Other than that, I might get in on this awesome deal which will probably double the potency of you PC for 40$ more. (The card is no longer 166$.)

PSU link isn't working but I'd get something at least 400W with at least 20 A on the 12 v rail.
2006-08-22, 9:41 PM #15
Yeah, I said the mobo I'd go different. I don't even have that one. SOrry about the video card, it was refurbished and hence $166.

This thread is a little bit premature if you haven't even got a penny, isn't it?

I mean, i'm gonna ask folks on this site to build me a computer at some point in september, because for a fact I know the information will be relevant since I'll have the funds to purchase the machine days later.

Just make sure you don't buy a power supply, and for ultimate performance, remove (or destroy) your internet cable port so that the internet cannot haunt your gaming.

Oh and remember, never use the machine except on storm nights, which is the best time to get a free source of energy!
