This cure for a guinea worm infection has been around so long, so believe it’s where we get the snakes-around-a-staff symbol for medicine.

Huh? I thought that symbol originates with some god or goddess. Prehaps someone from the medical field knows?

One of the comments at the bottom says it's from Moses*

I hate the thought of parasites. That word has some of the worst connotations of any I know, in my opinion.

* Google results say it's the symbol of Asklepios, the Greek God of Medicine.

The Greeks probably made the symbol that with the cure in mind.

Hermes carries a staff with two snakes wrapped around it. I don't remember anything about its origin though.

...or the Greeks made the symbol to represent the story of Aesculapius and the two snakes. It's Aesculapius's staff, not Hermes's.

Aesculapius's staff has only one snake wrapped around it, while Hermes's has two, as well as wings at the top. Both are used as symbols in medicine, but it seems that the former was always a symbol of medicine, while the latter became so after being used in alchemy.
