Sci-Fi channel cancels Stargate SG-1

It was bound to happen at some point. There's still a slight chance that some other network picks it up.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Ding dong the witch is dead...

SG-1 should have ended when Atlantis started. They need to end SG-1, kill of Teyla and/or Ronin and put Daniel Jackson and Teal'c on the Atlantis cast.

This only reminds me that the cancellation of Angel was very mean

Although I don't mind series 9 and 10, the end of series 8 feels like the true ending of SG1 to me.

And I agree with Jon about the cast changes, except for the "/or".

So, what, they're going to end it with a deus ex machina? That's ridiculous! They should at least finish season 10!

They mean canceled as in not renewed for another season.

Yeah. Season 10 is going to finish and a movie or mini-series is still quite possible.

I'm really hoping for another spinoff, but it's impossible to tell what'll happen at this point.
2006-08-23, 10:37 AM #14
Oh, good...well, I couldn't see much after season 10 anyway. The series has stagnated the past few seasons. I still enjoy it, but it's not quite the same. The acting and directing seems to have gotten a little sloppy. I've been watching seasons 1 through 3 when my sister has had them on recently, and it seems a bit more coherent. But it's hard to tell for sure without a direct comparison.

I hope they continue BSG. I'm not sure if it's my favorite sci-fi show ever, but it is definitely the most flawless sci-fi series ever created. I can only nit pick about a few of the technical aspects (such as the strange way they talk about computer networking and hacking), but since it's not a hard sci-fi, it's forgivable. The direction, writing, camera work, acting, all prime stuff.

Ugh. Yes, the direction and camerawork in SG-1 seasons 9 and 10 are awful. Awful awful awful. You don't even have to put it against an earlier episode: compare it to any typical episode of Stargate Atlantis and you can see it quite obviously.

SG-1 10x3 (Pegasus Project) is a good episode to make the comparison, because it includes both sloppy camerawork on Atlantis (camera angles the set wasn't designed for, bad lighting, handheld cameras and single takes) and on the Odyssey (fixed camera and wide angles, while Atlantis tends to use the handheld cameras on the Daedalus and close-in shots to make the ship look more claustrophic and more mobile - that is, more like a space ship and less like a TV show set on a concrete floor). 10x3 also demonstrates the horrible writing of SG-1 these days, what with how they completely and miserably failed to capture any of the Atlantis characters.

To once again point out an observation Nikumubeki made: Angel : Buffy :: Atlantis : SG-1.
2006-08-23, 1:37 PM #16
lets hope Atlantis lasts more than one series past SG1 then.

Yes, let's make a movie. We'll call it simpley "Stargate" and it'll star Kurt Russell and James Spader, and be made 12 years ago... :v:

i heard somewhere that the producers of the film want to make direct sequels that do not tie in with the series' whatsoever.

I heard that too, a few weeks back on here. :P

From what I had heard the Original Stargate Movie was meant to be the first in a trilogy. Unfortunately, after the first Stargate Movie, the rights were sold to Showtime to make a TV series (Stargate SG-1), and once that started airing, the studio refused to continue to original Trilogy because it conflicted with what they had done in SG-1.

There was a petition a while ago to either make the second two movies, or at least release the screen-plays that were supposedly already written.

Haha, but what'll happen is that they'll make the second two movies and, like the Star Wars prequels and the Matrix sequels, nostalgic fans around the world will whine about how aweful the Stargate sequels are once made.

Which means they should make them. ^_^

yeah, i didnt mind the star wars prequels too much (the three werent as good as the OT but nothing worth whining about).

And the matrix sequels less so, they're a load of fun.

I <3 the stargate film, i loved it many many many years before SG1. I'll love sequels.

That might be in the works too, actually. Sort of. The original creator of Stargate wants to continue the Stargate Universe as he saw it.

... *nervously raises his hand*
Actually, the petition site went under a while back, it seems. Maybe it wasn't getting enough sigs for their taste. Oh well.

-Apparently, Independence Day served as a kind of psuedo-sequel to Stargate. I never really liked SG-1, and can cite numerous differences between the movie and series that punctuate the matter. I actually like how the books (Retribution, Rebellion, etc) handled the post-Ra empire more than SG-1. System Lords? Wtf.
2006-08-23, 4:05 PM #26
Different doesn't mean bad. Besides, some of the tweaks the made were necessary for it to work as a TV show, and frankly, the SG-1 universe has ended up being a lot more interesting and diverse.

Well, of course nine seasons of TV is going to be more 'interesting and diverse' than two hours of movie... :P

They've done enough Stargate for about 120 movies, give or take.

I've not seen Angel and only a smattering of Buffy. Could you elaborate?

Angel was better. It had better writing, acting, a more epic storyline, far better cinematography and choreography, better characters, more engaging subject matter and fewer characters who die and are resurrected multiple times.
2006-08-23, 11:51 PM #31
Sci-fi is cancelling the show yeah, but MGM is looking for another network to pick the show up and continue it for a while more.

Which I hope they do, they were just getting into the Ori storyline and they wiped the slate clean, make SG-1 the under dogs again, they defeated the goa'uld and felt aweful good about themselves, now they have a more powerful enemy who actually DO have powers like gods.

If the writers muck it up by re-writin episodes and plots to tie everything up, it'll ruin anything stargate had going for it.

It has to be more than that. It's used on average at least once an episode. That puts the number close to 200. And I'd even call that low.

That's the truth, you can really play the "came back from the dead" card once. It's bad enough when the do it more than once at all, but to the same character? That was kinda silly.

As far as the Stargate thing goes, I have only seen a few episodes of SG1 and Atlantis, but all my friends say that they think Atlantis is better. Maybe I should try to catch up and start watching it.

That was according to the official transcripts, both as his usual single word replies and in sentences. He never said it once in season 1, only a few times in 2 and 3, with the frequency per season jumping up around seasons 5-6.

I haven't seen much of either show, but SG-1 had a much bigger feel of "We're running around the woods behind our house with toy guns and a camera", while Atlantis was awesome.
