I can't wait to hear from all the die-hard fans how their childhood has been raped with the new stuff.

I personally will be intrigued to see it :)

Awesome. I'd love to see those.

It would have been better if the new 3D models had been based upon the refit constitution class.

I'm not a die hard fan of either Star Trek or Star Wars, but when they go into an old movie or television show and replace old effects, it really seems to depreciate not only the movie's nostalgic charm, but its historic value - the intrigue of seeing the gradual evolution of special effects and film techniques over time.

It's not just that a "childhood is being raped," as those subjective memories will always exist as personal experiences, but that present and future audiences will be deprived of viewing these things in their original form. They won't be given the chance to contemplate and appreciate those periods when claymation was cutting edge, hanging miniatures thrilled audiences at Ben Hur, the scale models of Fritz Lang created a futuristic industrial Metropolis, and the Lucasfilm team revolutionized special effects in his basement.

We could track down the remaining reels of Gertie the Dinosaur and replace them with CGI generated, photorealistic images to the best of our ability, but how would such defacement of an important work of art, and the denial of our own past ultimately benefit us as a culture?

So yeah, I don't like this. :)

I hate it.

:(
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Ben Hur is still an awesome movie. It's actually held up rather well.

I'll give it a shot. Many movies have benefited from such.

Love it or hate it, I know I'm going to end out watching it.

I mean seriously, when's the last time Star Trek on TV was, you know... good?

the edited in special effects on star trek were never that bad imho, mostly the thing that made it look fake was scenery (not on the ships, but on the planets). I've no problem with them just increasing picture quality but whats the point in redoing special effects?
The ship exteriors werent great but models always look better than CGI to me. The outsidies of the ships in the early star trek movies look so much better than the ship exteriors in TNG which were horribly noticable CGI.

Either way if this is a chance to see more star trek on TV it's not a bad thing :)

One of the reason's I've never been able to bring myself to watch the original series was because of the graphics. I just couldn't stand them.

I wonder if they'll go back and remaster at least the first couple of seasons of TNG too?

I'm pretty sure they didn't use CGI for the models of the ships until AFTER the TNG series ended. They used CGI for ship models I'm pretty sure about halfway through DS9, VOY and ENT and for the movies after Generations.

It is CGI, just look at the intro.

It's way too 'clean' looking to be a model.. and this is a pic from season 7 but it was a [worse] CGI model in season 1 too.

I'm still not entirely convinced. I really do seem to remember hearing about the process of making the Enterprise-D model as well as the DS9 station model. Also, there's a certain style and feel and look to most CGI that doesn't seem to rub off. I don't doubt that CGI was used in SOME fashion -- after all, CG was used for Star Trek as early as The Wrath of Khan -- but... eh. I ain't gonna bet my life on this sort of thing.

Nah dude, pretty sure that's a model, too.

The ship exteriors of the Enterprise E in, like, First Contact, when you first see it, are beautiful.

Nope. STTNG switched to a limited number of CGI sequences starting from S4E2. The intros were always done with models, and also the entirety of seasons 1, 2 and 3.

EDIT: DS9 used models all the way through season 4, I believe. The space battle against the Klingons was done entirely using models and was one of the last large-scale model sequences ever done. Voyager was CGI throughout and, ironically enough, used roughly as many space sequences as TOS.

Because this way they don't have to think up something new.

DS9. After the Domion War really kicked into gear. I don't give a damn what anyone else says, THAT is the best Trek ever.

agreed.

I'm actually looking forward to see what they have done with the old TOS, whether or not it'll add to the series I'm not sure, but I'm interested none the less.

So don't buy it. As far as we know, the original editions aren't going anywhere. And even if they pull them from the shelves, they will be readily available all over the internet.

I look forward to this because the props and effects in TOS were pathetic. The budget was so low that phasers weren't pistols but rather small blocks of wood painted black. It was really sad. It wasn't "nostalgic," it was just bad.
