The Greatest American
2006-09-04, 10:46 AM #1
While surfing Wikipedia I came cross this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Greatest_American

George W. Bush was voted not only as the greatest living American, but the 6th greatest American of all time! Bill Clinton...the 7th greatest American of all time. Also: "Voters were allowed to vote three times per voting method [online, text message, telephone], so anyone had a chance of voting at least nine times." Bull**** anyone? The winner was Ronald Reagon, who got 1st place over individuals like Washington and Lincoln...yeah right. The kicker is that this nonsense actually aired on Discovery Channel.

So, I guess to make this thread useful, what is/was the greatest American?

There's the problem right there.

Ronald Reagan was also not the number one American. Whatever is affliated with this I will no longer trust.

Did Einstein take American citizenship? I'd give him one of my three votes. Likewise Stephen "[robovoice] OUCH [/robovoice]" Hawking.

And maybe I'd give my last one to Brian.

Just because you don't like Dubya (Or, apparently Reagan...) doesn't mean the poll is 'BS'. Really; people aren't idiots just because they don't agree with you. This 'everyone who doesn't think just like me must be retarded' mentality is why you fail.
Wikissassi sucks.

Your average person has a short memory and little historical perspective. I think that shows pretty well in these polls.

You people who say someone isn't number 1 (or whatever rank) simply because you don't think so need to shove it.

My personal opinion is that Ronald Reagan is number 1 by far.

Aye, Ronal Reagan was one of the greatest, but not at the top. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were put through much more trials and came out at the top.

If we were ranking presidents, I would say Abraham Lincoln and George Washington stand out the most. Kennedy is up there, so is Truman, and blah blah blah

You're right, but the poll really is more or less nonsense. You can tell that from the disproportionately high number of currently living people on it alone. No one can seriously argue that Rush Limbaugh, Michael Moore, John Edwards and Mel Gibson belong on a list of the 100 greatest Americans. Tom Cruise can only have been nominated ironically.

What the hell are you talking about? Blabbering on about completely inconsequential nonsense is why you fail good sir. The poll is BS because it allowed any single person to vote 9 times across various devices with little effort. Notice I posed the question "bull**** anyone?" after the Wikipedia quote on the voting system. And when it comes to not liking Reagon or Bush: I don't like Reagon being at the top or George W. Bush in the Top 6 any more than I like Bill Clinton at Number 7, but I also don't believe people who voted in the poll are "retarded." I believe they have an extremely short outlook on life based on the fact that they voted for a president that was barely half way through his presidency at the time and individuals like Tom Cruise (TOM CRUISE!).

Oprah is up there because Pontiac gave away hundreds of free-ish cars and Oprah somehow got the credit for it. It accomplished its mission though. You know that Pontiac is now making a car that isn't ugly, and Oprah is a little bit more popular as an added bonus.

It doesn't matter how many votes someone gets as long as everyone gets the same number. And these sort of polls usually have people 'pick their top n'.

Yeah except only the hardcore voters would actually vote nine times. It sounds like a really stupid system to me.
