Alright, this should be a great thread for Gold and I. Lets all write down projects you've started in the past that you failed to complete and list a reason why.

Thugs of Tatooine - Single-player JK project with Lightstaff. We hit some limitations on what we wanted to do and didn't feel they were worth the effort.

Eye of Chaos - Single-player JK project with Resident Evil-esque cam system. The camera system was just too clunky and I put too much detail in the architecture, creating too much HOM. Gave up to concentrate on Showdown.

Showdown - 3 different attemps, all failed for various reason. The first two times internal fighting in the teams and the disappearance of my coggers left me limping. The final attempt almost got complete (99%) but got destroyer in a HDD crash that taught me to backup.

The Dark Knight - JA Single-player level. Just didn't have time to fully learn the scripting and some impôrtant technicalities of the brush engine.

Oblivion Pirate mod - Annoyed by idiotic engine limitations. I still can't believe you don't have a simple line to remove a character. The only command hides him, but some info gets stored and bogs down game speed.

A Hero Story - Medieval Fantasy club. I just can't gather enough staff members to help build the club up. Everytime someone offers to help, they end up doing nothing and/or disappearing. Hopefully sooner or later I wont be the only one interested in that project :o <

So what about you guys :P

All of these failed except my MLP3 entry. All 50ish of them.

Okay, these are the ones that actually got more job done than a boxy room.

The Truth of the Destruction of Apocalopolis - My neatest MotS SP project ever, it even got to beta stage but fate decided to mess my hard drive just then :\

Anonymous - MotS SP, I tend to continue it sometimes but it's still more dead than alive. I'd want to revive it for some other new game though some day.

Actually, I don't even remember most of those. At the moment. I'll post more later.

Insanity V2.0 - pulled from massassi for "stolen" material, which was really a bunch of bs considering i sent in the proper documentation from the authors whom i borrowed material from stating that they gave me permission

Madalorian Madness - TC that was 99% complete, only the bm's were remaining before my sister spilled hot choclate all over the tower, that fried not only the hd, but my flash drive that was plugged into the front usb port, which had all my backups on it

The Force in your Soul - JK SP campaign/mod/PC that I lost interest in about 25% through. I had new weapons all designed and working, even dual sabers, but I started working on it less and less until I decided to put it off until JO came out, but I never started it back up in JO.

Some Visual Basic projects I had going I just dropped after a while.
2006-09-04, 11:24 AM #8
Jedi Headquarters - A JK MP level set in a Jedi community on a remote island. I dropped the project because I lost interest in it. I also had troubles getting the lightsaber-wielding Jedi AI to work in MP.

Mustafar - Another JK MP level set in a cave on Mustafar. I ended up not liking the design of the level after cleaving out the whole cave in JED. Perhaps I'll try a different approach to this level soon.

Theed - Hopefully this won't be a failure.

Only real projects I start are my writings, and I've finished only one in my life. I get a great idea (or, probably more accurately, what seems like a great idea), start writing, and before I get very far I end up quitting because of various reasons. The beginning of exams was one reason, other times because I just lose focus or motivation.

A JK level once.

I started an awesome MP map but then realised I was terribile at level design.

It was basically a great big tube (vertical) which had loads of bridges linking doors that zapped you to another one and a big hole at the bottom that warped you to the top. It looked like 2000 Block texturally, but played mental. I never made it polished enough to release because I lacked the skills to get things right first time.

Yeah, I lose interest in every level I make about halfway through. :(
DO NOT WANT.

I might have the source to Ewok Hunter, a glorified game of whack-a-mole, which I originally wrote in VB. I don't even have the game itself anymore, although I did write a version that could be used at the local gaming establishment, including high score charts and the like. If I have the source I could write it again in C# and post that somewhere.

Other than that, I wouldn't say I've left anything, but I've got a couple projects that I'm slowly working on:

- a Trade Fed ship for XWA
- prelim work for a flight sim (think TIE 2)
- a mod for XWA allowing gunner positions in capital ships starting with an ISD
- I was working on updating weapon stats in TIE to match that of XvT and XWA, but issues with the hard-coded targeting reticule "green light" equiations prevented me from getting it perfect, I may toy with it again
- umm, I might make the ship stats the same between all three flight sims, as some stats vary with certain craft (133 MGLT top speed in one game, 145 in another, etc).
- there's a program I was writing for a campaign sim creator for XWA, only 1/3 done or so.

That might be my entire to-do list, I'm not at my computer right now to read it off.

Close to everything I've ever attmpted. I've released 5 things I think, but I have over 100 project folders littering my hard-drive. :o

And curse hard-drive crashes. I mean, damn, what a way to go, especially if you look at the number of awesome things that are lost that way. The one that instantly springs to mind is Sine's Nar level, which looked to be hardcore awesome

And I didn't even realize that Showdown was lost due to that. What a shame, I always wanted to play that mod. :(

When I used to actually try to edit, and when JO was brand new:

-Beta island, a MASSIVE terrain-type open map with every weapon in the game available all at once in these little pockets of mountains, plus floating sky towers for the disrupters

It was designed to be a map where people could test new mods, as all the weapons and everything were readily available, plus it was huge and open. It was inspired by the Bar and Grill map for JK (I forgot who made it), which is the level Froggy and I always used to test new mods (Because all the weapons were readily available and you could spawn a huge amount of NPCs)

-Melancholy nation, a floating-in-space CTF map. This is one map that I actually did (the most decent) work (that I was capable of) on .. I actually managed some ok archi, texturing, and item placement. I was almost done with one side ( I was just going to mirror it), but then GtkRadiant started being stupid and I just gave up.

Oh man... I don't like to think of these as failed projects, as I feel I could always pick back up on them, and wish to, but....

The Eternal War (and Vision Cycle)
This was a continuation of Saga of the 3rd War and The Shadows of Darkness. It started off strong enough, but my requirements for the story and the series escalated a lot -- e-mails and notes and the like became increasingly complex and, unlike the NeS, was meant to be mostly serious and the like. I was trying to tackle the ultimate life questions to my satisfaction, which has left it halted at the climax more or less with no ending in mind that I like (among other details). Also, the story was plagued with writers beginning to drop out -- currently, The Last True Evil and myself would likely be the only major active writers that could pick back up on it. I don't want to continue with the other stories either until this one is done, which is leaving The Change and The Crusade unwritten for as of yet. While the subject matter and the disappearing writers (Highemperor and Krig in particular) have made completing difficult, I blame mostly myself.

A Never-ending Story Illustrated
It's been plagued with never really picking up from the start. I had trouble doing the roughs, our original artist had trouble doing the finals, etc. You'd think having a story already would make it easier, but I think it might make it harder, as we're trying to capture the original story in visual format, leaving less room for just "making stuff up." And for the past year-ish, we've not had an artist altogether. I'm ashamed to say that, even though I'm an art major, I feel I have neither the skill nor the energy (the second plaguing most ANY artist) to do the comic myself, and searching for an artist who will stay dedicated and would be interested is rather difficult.

Dreamer's Addiction
I took a script-writing class where the entire semester we were supposed to write just one huge feature-length play/movie-script/what have you. I was a slacker and didn't work nearly as much as I shoudl have, and come the end of the semester I was rushing to get it finished. My "finished" version was way too short and crap, but it didn't matter -- I tried to save it and it failed. My work was lost. I went to her office, with what work I did have on a floppy and a notebook where I was nearly breaking down as I attempted to re-write the script right there. I talked to her, and she decided to take pity on me and give me an incomplete, giving me the summer to come back with a finished script. Of course, I was still a lazy-*** (and a perfectionist and way too patient - bad combination) so I never finished it. I still have an incomplete in my record (despite that it should be an F now since it's been a year) and it's STILL an unfinished script. As with The Eternal War, I think about it a lot, continue with lots of notes and characterization and the like... just about everything but actually writing it. It's mostly because I haven't come up with big-point ideas I'm satisfied with.

There's a bunch of other stuff, but those are the main 3 "failures" I'd really like to not make failures someday.

  • Remnants of the Empire (JK/JO): After 3 installments, I decided to cancel the series. The response to part 3 was subpar and I last all that I had on level 4 due to a hard drive failure. Also, I didn't like the direction the story was going. I did attempt to revive the series as a remake on Jedi Outcast but I never got around to finishing the level. I'm debating whether I should just release what I have on Massassi Temple. The level is about 80% finished and it does have an premature end so it is playable. It's just not finished.

  • Leeza's Destiny (MotS): Even though the last installment of this series was the highest rated level pack I ever received, I decided to cancel the series because I didn't like the direction I was going with the story. Also, I last everything I had on level 5 in a hard drive wipe... again :(

  • Jake McHenry: Clone Menace(MotS): After two levels, I decided to end it because the premise of the series was pretty lame. A Kyle Katarn clone was a pretty cliche idea.

  • Space Soldiers 3 / Fatal Resistance TC(JK): The first and only TC I made for Jedi Knight. Was based on a story I was writing sicne Junior High. It original started out as a weapon mod (the "Death From Above" was the inspiration) but later evolved into a full multiplayer mod. I was also planning to do a single player campaign too but it didn't go anywhere since I was up to the task. The TC is currently cancelled but I would like to revive it again on another engine. Sadly I don't have the passion nor the time to learn another engine.

There were many other projects that I have started (for both JK and MotS as well as other games) but they never developed to the point where I would consider them a "failure", hence why I'm not going to list them in this thread.

21 Consecutive Events
I talked about this one before, basically a Max Payne/GTA sorta game about a guy who lost his family because he got hooked on the white dragon, and now he spends every day getting a hit and sitting ont he bench across from his daughters school. One day, there's some sort of horrible shooting in front of the school, somehow related to his habit, and his wife and daughter are killed, shortly followed by himself. The idea was that he wakes up that morning again, Groundhog's Day style, unharmed and with the knowledge of what happened.
The orignal idea was a mod for Max Payne that basically was 21 levels long and each one was him trying to stop the tragedy, each one changed slightly. The other idea was a stand-alone game that would somehow be able to react to the player's various attempts, and would allow the player 21 tries to get it right. Either way, it seemed to fall to the major conciet of video games, as it was basically a difficult challenge that gives you 21 lives. Plus, I had no idea how to do any programming or anything, and the story never got far past planning. The name was based on the common self-help idea (I don't know if it's real, I don't think it is) that 21 consecutive events can change a human being's behavior, such as not drinking coffee every morning for three weeks is supposed to remove that from your auto-pilot behaviors, supposedly. I dunno.

Star Wars: Extreme Measures
I still work on this one, doing the occasional model and whatnot. Basically, a game set during the NJO, about a group of eight outcasts who are thrown together by the force to blah blah blah you know how it goes, classic NR storlyine with evi lmoff and superwapon, dark jedi, the works, plus some Vong. Originally slated for Max Payne, probably more likely a JA game now, if at all.

-Others, but I feel kinda ill right now, so maybe no more forums right now.

ive probably released maybe 6 maps... and i have around 290 .map files in my "maps" folder. some of those are probably maps used only to make ASE models, though.

so lets just say i have 200-250 unfinished/abandoned projects.

oh, and ill post this one for me and Thrawn:

HA! I couldn't list all the projects I've attempted to complete. Hell I can't even remember them. I'm pretty sure all the failures are attributed to having about a donkey load of folders with a donkey load of other donkey in them not helped by the fact that I'm hell of a donkey lazy. On the subject of donkeys, I once rode on a donkey it was pretty cool.

  • Restaurant At the End of the Universe - A JK MP map that's pretty near complete. It never felt done to me though, so it never got released.
  • Snaskii - An ASCII only Nibbles clone in C++. I got in over my head programming-wise.
  • Several simple RPG type games. I just didn't have enough inspiration to get motivated about them.
  • An essay comparing Linux and Windows to different types of women.
  • Lots of Flash cartoons. Two music videos, a stick fight cartoon, and one that must never be seen.

And much, much more.

- Third Death Star for Dark Forces - Sucked, needed to be killed, couldn't find a direction for it to go that didn't suck more than it was sucking already.
- Pac Man: Revisited for Jedi Knight Arena - Oh wait I finished this one didn't I. Never mind. >.> :v:
- Kessel for Mysteries of the Sith - Realized my rock/mineshaft creation skills were non-existent. It would not have made for a good level. I'll stick to buildings.
- fuel_repository for Jedi Knight Invasion - GoY never finished the cogs for Invasion and then everything fell apart. Also there would have had to been lots of tricky yet cool cog effects coded by me. Also the outdoor area sucks and would need to be redone anyways. Maybe someday.
- Abandoned Warehouse for Jedi Knight - I got bored doing a city skyline, and it was sucking in detail anyways. Still, it is the nicest looking and most functional of all my levels, I will have to resume work on it someday.
- Imperial Base #2040 - I didn't finish this one. And I definitely didn't try to submit this, my ugliest level ever, to a MLP contest. Nope. Eventually I might go around and fix this up, but probably not. It's just too ugly and embarrassing, even if it is fun.
- NeS for Jedi Knight - Yay for Grim Fandango-type engine games... I got a simple working camera engine. And some bland archi. Ooh and a sucky potted plant. Sorta lost interest shortly thereafter.
- Let's Roll and Let's Roll: Director's Cut for Rolling Mod - Whoops, finished these too.
- Dark Forces TC for Jedi Knight - Everyone's tried to make one of these. Mine actually has weapons for it that I borrowed from various mods, I even got whatshisname to port me his jeron fusion cutter, which is really the only thing that works (Assault Cannon only has SP code, so it doesn't do damage in MP). Failed because I did not know how MP stuff worked. Maybe someday I'll fix it up, get someone to make me proper models, etc. Ooh I also tried to make my own conc rifle model. That was an experience in ugliness and PAIN and internal view polies rendering in the wrong order.
- Saratoga V for Dark Forces - Inspired by "Danger Room", I wanted to make a VR-type level where you picked the enemies you would fight. I eventually added a real mission around it, but I never made more than the selection rooms.
- Sith Temple for Dark Forces - Haven't given up on this one yet. However I only have a few small areas done. What I do have I like though.

MZZT, SAJN_Master/Victor Van Dort and Tracer (well, and myself) all get to be part of the "Let's make an NeS game! Ack, no wait, too much work >_<" club. Well, and Krig, but he was trying to just make a MP-type map based on the Arena. He got the very basic structure, but that was about it. That may have been all he was trying to accomplish, I forget.

Creed Chonicals- Comic series that took place between episodes 1 and 2 of starwars about the true chosen one, a padawan "Sindra Creed" and her Jedi master "Tandra Evec".

Made 2 issues and lost interest when the next movie came out and it threw off my vision.

I help people comic - Comic series about me helping people that usually involved fish in some way.

Made about 4 and stopped cause it just wasnt funny.

Thinking about starting "Creed chronicals" again since it had potential. Ill just have ot rework the focus of the series. I had some good ideas. Would be a nice way to get this place back onto starwars.
