Trix are for kids!

Ok. So I just went to install MS Word and Excel ('97 edition) and it refused to install. It would get to 100%, and give me something about "Blahblahblah.exe could not be entered into the registry" or something to that effect.

SO. My question to Massassi is what is a good FREE alternative to MS Word and MS Excel that is preferrably not an Office Suite type thing (a la OpenOffice). I resent MS Office, as well as OO (when I used it). I just want to open up my program and type away.

Excel because occasionally it's a nice thing to have.

But, if there's no good alternative, what would MS Word/Excel cost for the average consumer?

Edit: Any time I said MS Office, replace that with MS Works. Sorry, I'm an idiot.
I had a blog. It sucked.

OK. Anything that lets me have a little more control over font sizes, types, colors, and whatnot?

Abiword for word processing, Gnumeric for spreadsheets. Both have Win32 versions.
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

I retract the "win" part of my statement, but I'll still remember it. I just won't have to feel bad about stealing it from him.

They're charging $1.59 per download now. And it's not even the latest beta (there is apparently a more private beta 2 and a technical refresh). Just google for it and you'll find it.

I still have to recommend OpenOffice even though you say you don't like it.

I did hear something about a word processor called AbiWord, but I know nothing about it.

Have you used OpenOffice since 2.0? 2.0 is leaps and bounds better than 1.x.
