MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA - Sep. 8, 2006 - Almost two years after the debut of Firefox 1.0, and a year after the successful release of Firefox 1.5, Mozilla Corp. today released plans for an instant messaging service, Waterwolf. Mozilla Corp. is teaming up with Google with plans to build upon the success of Google's own Google Talk instant messaging service.
“Mozilla has connected with the global community of Web users because it delivers a fast, easy, modern browsing experience”, said Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google. “Google continues to support the growth of Mozilla because of the strong alignment between our mission to organize the world’s information and make it useful, and Mozilla’s principled approach to developing great software.”
“We plan to combine the best of both worlds. We are working on an instant messaging service that people can use to talk with their family and friends in ways they weren't able to before. We will draw in many new users to the improved Web experience it affords,” said Mitchell Baker, CEO of Mozilla Corporation. “Firefox is proof of our passion for promoting choice and innovation on the Web and making the Internet accessible and productive. Waterwolf is going to bring that same user friendly feel and accessibility to the instant messaging scene."
“Waterwolf represents the tireless efforts of both our companies, who continue to work to make the Web experience better for everyone,” said Baker.
Mozilla Corp. announced a beta release of Waterwolf should be available as soon as December.
