Post your Vista fun...

Well if anyone has gotten into the open RC1 release that I did, I wanted to discuss it and see what you guys though, personally I like it, very heavy on the resources though so I definatly don't recommend it to very low end computers... and while we're here post your Vista computer score.

I'm using it now. It's pretty neat. Mostly just playing the new Solitare hehe

If your duel booting with XP Beta 2, does it cause problems to change over to RC1?
2006-09-14, 7:15 PM #4
I'm guessing you mean Vista Beta 2. I booted from my Windows XP CD. Went to recovery console. (press R) Type FIXMBR and press enter. Then FIXBOOT and enter. That will restore the XP bootloader. Then when you go to install RC1, just delete the partition that Beta 2 was on and install there.

RC1 is out?

Well I know what I'm installing when I get my comp fixed.

It's a lot more stable then Beta 2. The only thing I can't get working is my SLI.

I find it to be more stable but they are right, it's not for development computers, it's a beautiful design but the backend of it is still alittle unstable.
2006-09-14, 8:10 PM #8
I ripped out my Beta 2 install by hand from within XP. Not too hard, with the notable exception that you need a specific tool to delete the junctions Vista makes. I found it by accident.

RC1 is neat. Only problems I've had with it are the occasional sporatic reset, but it seems to have good uptime more recently.

Oh and DAEMON Tools doesn't work :psyduck: And Dev-C++ is unusable :-(

Many programs DO work, which is cool.

FYI: My Windows Experience score is 3.1, HA!

Another problem I'm having... the official nVidia drivers can't do fullscreen consoles. Seriously, WTF?

I like how they ran out of things to do with prettifying the folder icons, so they turned it sideways.

Take that there and put it in here

You're comparing a final release of OS X to the third beta of Vista? Uh huh.

That's right, I said beta. RC1 is not a release candidate. Microsoft mangles all sorts of naming.

Try waitting for the final release and then compare.

no.

My experience with Vista so far:

Daemon Tools won't work. :(

Firefox's default theme seems to make huge scrollbars.

The default security settings are annoying as hell.

Microsoft didn't add ANY good features for us dual monitor users. Waiting for Ultramon3 to fix the problem, as usual.

My printer drivers aren't available for Vista. (They stop at R320, I have R340 >.>)

My scanner drivers aren't available for Vista.

My TV tuner drivers aren't available for Vista.

Gadgets which update every second or more (CPU/MEM meter, clock with second hand, uptime, etc) will increase your CPU usage quite a bit. (15% continuous with all 3 on)

Some programs can't use Aero, so Windows temporarily reverts to non-aero which besides looking ugly as sin, also takes the PC a good minute or two to switch in and out.

Creative's drivers leave room for improvement (They work, but it's missing some of the surround settings and such that I used for music). Thankfully, my speakers have ways of compensating :D
2006-09-15, 8:21 AM #20
Well most of those problems you listed CM have to do with it...ya know...not being an official OS yet, and vendors not wasting time/money on making drivers/other things for it because of that.

That said, judging anybody based on Creative's drivers is just hurrtastic. Seriously, Creative drivers suck more wang than Fr--er, than a two dollar whore.

I dislike the default look of Vista (assuming that's what's being showcased here). I'm sure there's a certain amount of customization that will be available, but it's really sad that Windows is still this ugly after all of these years. If IE7 is any indication of just how ugly Vista is going to be, I'm not going to be a happy camper. It's about time that Microsoft starts putting a little ****ing effort in to the look and feel of their OS. All of the above screenshots look like a really ****ty XP theme.

The whole folder sideways thing is just weird.

Overall, the look is pretty good. Then again, I never had a problem with the way windows looked.

3d on the desktop is just awesome.

I'd have to disagree. The newer beta series for the Audigy 2 (I'm not sure if they are still in beta) have never given me a problem. Even when running my E-MU 1212m soundcard which uses similar drives since it uses an EMU10k chip.

My EMU-0404 ran pretty well under Windows.

I don't plan on buying a copy of Vista, so I'll probably get to see it in action on someone else's PC soon enough.

Malus, I was quite shocked to find E-MU 1212m drivers available from Windows Update when I ran Vista Beta 2. Infact, I don't think I had to install anything by hand. It all ran great, I was really suprised.

And seeing how this is a discussion of Vista RC1, my entire post was valid.

I had to get mine off of creative's site for Beta 2, but RC1 had them ready.

The drivers aren't BAD, it's just missing the usual Surround Mixer and all that other jazz.

Yeah, but it isn't that simple under FreeBSD though. :P

I gave the card to my dad though, so it will go to use.

My key to Vista and drivers:

don't use Vista beta drivers. Use XP drivers, and everything works fine!!! That was my experience with my hardware, especially the sound card. Could only get the Live 24-bit to work with XP drivers

Bad idea. Very, very, very bad idea.

Vista is supposed to be incompatible with XP drivers. And in my experience, it is DEFINATELY true. Most of the time they'll insta-bluescreen you on install or do other very nasty things.

yeah, I know. I work in an office, and I know that if you try to hold a folder sideways like that, all of your papers fall out.

Maybe that's what microsoft has in mind for your files. :ninja:

Me calling you out on your stupidity. Just because you posted something stupid, and I called you on it doesn't mean that I'm "gunning for you". If anyone else had posted the same thing I would've responded in kind. Dev-C++ works just fine.

Maybe the newest of the new drivers don't, but Creative has quite the horrendous history with their drivers. Seriously, it's almost as bad as ATI's old *nix drivers.

That said, Crimson, I wasn't trying to be witty in any way whatsoever. If I was trying to be witty it'd involve some kind of joke on Emon's behalf.

Dev-C++ works fine in XP. It even has support for XP themes built in. Vista it does not work for (ListView controls like to crash it, but the bigger problem is I can't get compiling to work).

For Vista and XP drivers, don't use XP video drivers. Vista drivers only. I think audio devices MIGHT new drivers as well because of the new user-mode stuff. Other than that, just try drivers if Windows Update draws a blank.

[Edit: On a related note, OpenVPN's tap driver will BSoD Vista, so don't use OpenVPN. If a driver BSoDs on you and then BSoDs every boot, do a "Last Known Good Configuration" boot to remove the driver automatically.]

http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/

These are some generic TV tuner drivers. I haven't tried them in Vista yet, but they install in RC1 (they didn't in Beta 2). Media Center doesn't recognize them :( but I'll try out Winamp TV or something soon to see if they work.
