Windows 98 Dual Boot....
2004-07-02, 10:39 AM #1
First of all, I know this should be in the technology forum, but it's not visited too often, and I need a reply rather quick.

I'm at work, and I need to get a program to run on a laptop, but it's a DOS Program.

All the other computers at work are Windows 98, and run it no problem.

The laptop is XP. The program has to be run off the main computer on our network, and I had everything set up on the laptop exactly as it is on the other computers. But when I try to run the program I'd get an error right from the start.

I tried using DOSBOX to emulate DOS, it will run the program, but I'd get the same error but it'd happen after about a minute or so of use, so it helped a little.

I tried running DOSBOX On the computer that hosts the program and can normally run the program without a problem, and the error still came up, so I can only assume the problem is in the emulator, rather than the fact that the laptop is XP.

It was recommended to me that I try a dual-boot with windows 98, but I don't know how to do it, and any help would be beneficial. XP Is already on it's own partition on the laptop, and there's still another partition that's considerably empty, that I could install it on, but how do I go about setting it up to dual boot... I guess just install windows?

If anyone could provide me with some help, it would be HIGHLY appreciated, or if you know of another DOS Emulator (for Windows) that might work, that could help too.

Windows 98 likes being on the primary partition. Ideally, you would install 98 to it's own partition first, then install the second OS on the second partition. Everything else can come later, but that seems to be the major problem facing you at the moment.

Windows can run on a separate partition as long as it's on the primary drive (master). You need to run the install program and point it to that partition (you may have to fdisk it back to fat32 if it's ntfs). Once win98 installs, you will always boot 98! So then you have to get your computer to pop up a menu, I used to use system commander but windows xp also has a boot manager. I don't know how to do it though.

REMEMBER _ if you do anything wrong or if my instructions are off, YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING - so please verify all information. It's been a long time since I dual booted win98 and I have NEVER used xp more than a couple of days and never dual booted it.

Boot manager? I think it's the same for all Windows, but normally it's...

My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery.
