Why Bush won, and why things won't get any better.
2006-09-15, 10:19 PM #1
I've realized something. The only reason bush won is because he was running against Gore and Kerry. It's not like we had much of a choice. Sure, Bush has done the best job in the world, but the alternatives are just as bad, if not worse. No one with a brain voted "for Kerry", or "for Bush", they voted "against Kerry" or "against Bush". And the trend will inevitably continue because elections are decided by the people whose intellectual prowess tops out at grunting "bush sux!" or "bush rulz!". I think it'd be nice if we started a campaign to get the people who are discussed by the Republican and Democratic candidates to vote for a third party, not so much to win, but just to let everyone know that we're not impressed. I really hate the idea that when I turn 18 my choices for the leader of the most powerful nation on the earth will be dumb or dumber.

What do ya'll think? Who is honestly impressed by either political party?

Hah! Americans don't vote for their president. You'd think people would realize that by now?

I fail to see how making people vote for a third party will do anything positive.

How can you say that?

Unfortunately a third party will probably never emerge from our system. A surprising number of Americans are more moderate than left or right nowadays but most just refuse to vote rather than change the system.

I'm unhappy with my choices for governor this election, I think I'm just writing Jesse in for it.

a guy I know that's defending his judgeship this election won the primary by a freaking landslide, 17,000 for and the next closest nomination was around 4,000 votes.

Personally, I'd have been okay with Dean winning in 2004 instead of either of Kerry or Bush

The two-party system could easily be defeated if everyone who WANTED to vote for a third party actually DID it, instead of just saying "Oh, I"ll be throwing my vote away."

I voted FOR Kerry, and it's quite obvious that he'd have done a way better job than bush. I'm sure of that now looking at the vast screwups he's had. Historians have already rated bush's reign as one of the worst America's ever had.

To rate Bush's Presidency now is irresponsible. Time needs to pass before evalutaing the impact of events that are currently going on.

I want a dictator. Not the "lol bush r tyrant" but a true fascist dictator.

Just because our most recent candidates weren't the brightest doesn't mean the next batch won't be intelligent. In 2008 we're looking at Clinton vrs Julliani (I spelled that wrong) or maybe that other guy who's name I forget. None of these people are idiots (Though one of them is a woman. Same thing, right?)

Regardless, I don't think any candidate who isn't moderate can win. I explained why in detail here

I disagree with too many on both sides of the fence and will continue to vote for my 3rd party candidate of choice. All that it takes for a 3rd party to gain significant ground in this country is for a well-loved and popular candidate to run in one. Someone that really gets people excited. However, there are very few people with that sort of status and even fewer who will run for office. We've seen 3rd party candidates win on the state level and one day we'll see it happen on the national level. It's inevitable.

I'm hoping McCain gets on the bill, and I hope that the Democrats choose someone other than Hillary Clinton, because that would be a terrible mistake on their part.

Of course, there'd be at least some people who'd vote for her simply because "lawl voted 4 teh 1st wumann president :v:"

Hillary Clinton has been hyperconservative ever since she got rich, anyway. The Bushes and the Clintons play golf together. A good reason not to vote for her is that it's what Bush wants.

I'm not gonna care that much about U.S presidents until some guy called Philip Mead enters the office.

I agree that a significant portion of voters chose the presidential candidate because they were choosing between the less bad of two crappy choices, but there were a lot more voters who voted for Kerry out of hatred for Bush than voters who voted for Bush out of hatred for Kerry.

Bush won because he appealed to stubborn interest groups--pro-life groups, the evangelical community, the warhawks. He had a clear stance on all these issues; he wasn't going to show a sign of flip-flop politics (which killed Kerry). In the end, people knew what GWB was about without question. You couldn't say teh same for Kerry.

She's not a conservative. She fiendishly mixes the worst extremists views from both sides. Someone needs to slap her, hard. Mom my always hated Hillary.

Honestly Bill Clinton may have been a lying weasel, but at least he was smart. The same can't be said for Kerry or Gore. Honestly, how incompetent do you have to be to raise Bush's approval ratings. And Gore had too many retarded environmental ideas. (lol let's make economy-crippling changes based on a hypothesis I read on an Internet forum) You know that's what would have ended up happening.

With, Bush, yeah things could be a lot better. Bush did get us into this stupid war, enacted a bunch of stupid patriot act laws, and spent way too much money.
On the other hand, he didn't hurt the economy, and he he had sense enough not to sign the Kyoto treaty. He is actually doing something about terrorism even if it's not being done well. And people forget, making those decisions are really hard. They could have been a lot worse. Most most of all, he didn't change anything too much.

I’m noticing a strong anti-woman trend in this forum recently. While I accept the fact women can’t do everything as good as men (or vice versa) it is inappropriate to say women can’t do as good a job in power, because they can. The problem we’ve had is the women who have gained power haven’t always fully understood what is happening and made mistakes, many men have made the same mistake but we tend to forget about them.

While I’ve never liked Bush (or Blair) I must admit that some of you have made good points in his defence, he’s made mistakes, some of them big, but he has kept the country stable.

Personally I think it’s time we got rid of both Bush and Blair but the question is who to replace them with, I don’t have a good enough understanding of either politics or those running for government to make that decision.

That’s my two cents.

I'm just waiting to see who the next president will be, and what he/she will do. I want to see him start out well, and in 3 months be eaten alive by the press and this forum.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Eh, hopefully the Democrats will take control of congress this November and then there will be a voice of reason who can overturn the president's stupid decisions.

Voice of reason!? Democrats have become the conservative free speakers. Yes, you heard me: Conservative Free Speakers.

Like this:

Some college students last year at my school got together and held a bake sale. They sold the same muffin for fifty cents, a dollar, and two dollars. Black, female, and white males received these prices, respectively. The bake sale was called "Affirmative Reaction."

Liberal idiots at our school, instead of allowing the students to make their statement (Muffins weren't actually being sold.) that affirmative action is racism from the white male's perspective, shut down the bake sale, and suspended several students.

Last week, there was a drive to hand out school supplies to poor black students in the EXACT same quad that the bake sale was held in. No school interference, in fact, the school provided the free lunch.

And Kerry is a god damned idiot. Have you read any of his "Well, I would have.." statements in regards to Bush? He literally takes some idiot extremist thing Bush does, and flips it OVER to show how NOT bush he is.

These people keep FIGHTING over what's right, rather than trying to find what is right. They're so involved with the party war that both of the parties are the same thing: Angry people telling other angry people why they can't be as angry as they are.

I think that the Democrats will fail in November and in 2008 as well. They're so dead set on hating Bush that they have the notion that everyone else thinks the way they do and from what i've seen they have no ideas of their own on how to get anything done. I think that the democrats have gotten so far left and out of touch with the majority of people in America that they have effectively alienated themselves from all but the fringe.

As a democrat myself, I'd have to agree completely.
