Good god...I haven't played that game in forever. I think I got my honor up to 22 or 23, and then stopped. I pretty much only played Mountain Pass, as that was my favorite.

AAO Tracker. Most servers are heavily busy, so don't expect great speeds. I'm going at 1/2 speed.

i found it funny in one of the training missions in AA, when the guy who knows korean starts talking to you in korean about how you are wasting your life playing this game.

i believe it was the one where you speak to a bunch of people with different skills that can speak various languages.

I would have to say that a battery of tests in hand-eye coordination and leadership skills doesn't qualify as propaganda. Especially when they're offering it freely to the masses and no one is forcing you to take any part in it.

And yay for Slayder and his absolutely pointless remark and cheap attempt at taking a jab at Gold!

So if it's free then it's not propaganda? Does that mean that when companies advertise using false consequences (e.g. showing that if you drink soda A then you will have _ number of friends and be social) is not a form of propaganda?

again, your logic is a little backward here, it being avaiable to the masses makes it less of a form of propaganda how?

I don't understand how if someone is (according to these replies) a)free and b) readily aviable to the masses

how it is not propaganda (espically when knowing what propaganda is)

Definition of "propaganda" from webster:

Quote:
2 : the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person
2006-09-19, 3:02 PM #29
And on a side note: after I made that post I looked up propaganda on wikipedia (not saying it's the best source, but this will serve as some message perhaps) and in that article I found:

Quote:
In the early 2000s, the United States government developed and freely distributed a video game known as America's Army. The stated intention of the game is to encourage players to become interested in joining the U.S. Army. According to a poll by I for I Research, 30% of young people who had a positive view of the military said that they had developed that view by playing the game.

Its propaganda indeed, but most people who play it couldn't pass the physical test even if their life depended on it. Some of us had fathers from past Wars, who forbid us from ever joining the army, such as my own, who I am glad that he was able to talk some sense into me from not running to the U.S. at age 18 to join the army, which was one of my first goals in life.

Now I don't feel any natural lure to the army, just videogames.

Your parents can't forbid you from joining the army if you are 18. And if they bring the draft back (if you lived in the US that is) there is nothing he could really do.

Or you just... don't want to join the army.
DO NOT WANT.

Well there areee things you can do (like get citizenship to another country and drop US citizenship) which would be quite drastic of course.

There are also legal exemptions in past drafts (e.g. in Vietman, there was the college exemption)

None of these "loopholes" would exist in a draft today.

It's COMPLETELY propaganda. One of the head people who worked on the game is affiliated with our college, and is a close friend of one of my professors. Being one of the head designers, he was told by the military that this most recent version should have absolutely flawless translations of in-tank HUDs to the ones in game. The idea is that players who play the game would be offered a job as a tank operator, and would be 1/3rd trained already.

Another concept behind the game is that it trains and hones young people BEFORE they reach their peak reaction age, thus when they hit 18 and join up with the military, they've already been mostly trained on military standards and equipment so that they are in prime condition, both mentally physically, to enter combat.

Last but not least, the 11/13th page of the end user license agreement allows the government to take any data from your computer using the game. This is intentionally there so that they may collect personal information to determine who is playing the game, and to target them specifically. Nevermind that it gives the government discreet access to your computer...

Oh, and AA replaced 150 recruiters in it's debute year.

Well it depends, for a draft to go through, congress must pass (and the president sign obviously) new legislation. You are right that the most popular one that went up to vote a few years ago didn't include things like college exemption (had only for 1 semester)

But that doesn't necessairly mean that a draft that would be passed would not include such exemptions. But the likleyhood of them not having them is unknown I suppose, depends on whose in power at the time.
2006-09-19, 7:45 PM #40
Yeah, it's propaganda, but is that a bad thing?
It's designed to be informative about the military and be fun at the same timeI haven't played the game in years but I think it achieved that quite well.

Yes, the whole access to your PC is bad, I agree there.

But for something that is largely as accurate as they could make it I think it's good.
Porpaganda is good when it's accurate and is not forced on you.

Unless, of course, you consider the entire existence of a military entity as a whole a bad thing.
