Can the Pope...?

Can the Pope declare a crusade against Muslim nations and cause a coalition to form that goes in and conquers a bunch of land and overthrows a bunch of leaders?
2006-09-16, 10:58 PM #2
He could declare a crusade, I suppose, but what country would actually answer the call? How many catholic theocracis are there in the world?

He could back in midevil times when religion was a big part of government, he is more a symbol now than anything therefore he has very little power, when it comes to declaring wars... well other than holy wars.

I think the more pressing question is whether the Pope is allowed to apologize. How can you regret doing something if you're infallible?

Because Catholics believe that the Pope is only "infallible" in terms of church teaching, which basically amounts to a principle that the Pope's interpretation is the one that counts.

When he's just bashing muslims, that's not invoking the infallibility doctrine. Especially when he's committing a sin of ommission by quoting something anti-muslim and then not challenging it.

Plus, he shouldn't appologize other than to express sorrow for the reaction some are making. Islamic areas routinely react offensively probably because Islamic governments and press spin the issues into things they were never meant to be.

technically, yes, he can. its happened before (see 1000-1300s CE.) but no one will listen to him now.

i mean, how many catholics do you know who practice birth control? almost all the ones under 30 that i know do. and according to the pope, birth control is a bad thing.

I agree somewhat, alike to what the British royal family is now compared to medieval times. Then they were the power of the state. Now they are figures for the media, inquirer, etc. I doubt they have real influence in politics.

The pope however is still considered the spiritual leader for many, his words hold more weight than does [most] individual countries. Muslims see him as the leader of Christianity, which they associate with all western countries...

This doesn't OK their blatant, ignorant reactions to anything westerners say about Islam
This is retarded, and I mean drooling at the mouth

Insult Islam, and a nun gets decapitated.
Insult Christianity, and... eh. Whatever.

And don't give me any of that Spanish Inquisition bull****. That was centuries ago. Clearly, the Christian faith has grown out of that sort of behavior. Islam hasn't.

Islam seems to be in a Dark Ages moment right now.

No, the... Swiss? army (Dont quote me on that), protects the vatican, they don't have any armed forces of their own.

See? That argument doesn't prove ****.

Besides, the Pope is the Vicar of Christ. That doesn't mean he has magical powers, that means he is granted the (temporary) authority to lead the church in the stead of Jesus. What's next, are you going to call Catholics Mary-worshippers again? Or are you going to tell them that they worship three gods? How about some original lies this time?
