Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma
2006-09-20, 3:17 PM #1
Today in Chem. our teacher told us that there are solids, liquids, gases, and plasma(s)

He said he wouldn't go into detail about plasma and said he wouldn't ever talk about it.

I wasn't aware that Plasma was in a league of its own. All I know is that plasma is in lightning bolts.

Do things like "Plasma TV's" have plasma in them as well?

The plasma in plasma tv's is different I think. Plasma is really hot and pretty.

If you understand the difference between solid, liquids, and gasses as it applies to molecular structure, then plasma is simple. Plasma is a gas that is so hot that the electrons un-bind from the nuclei and bounce around freely. You can get an im-pure plasma just by bombarding a gas with lots of electricity.

Also, microwaving lightbulbs can be an illuminating experience.

There's actually a bunch of things that are considered to be different "states of matter".

But yes, plasma is cool.

I never had a microwave when I was young. So I didn't take my first dangerous steps into the world of science. :(

Yeah, Plasma = lightning / fire / etc.

It's pretty fun stuff

None of my teachers would ever broachy the subject of Plasma. I'd bring it up and they'd get all defensive and change the subject.

My chem teacher is open to the discussion, and has already told us pretty much what it is.

I made plasma in a microwave as a science project last year. Fun stuff. Really prettyful too.

I had a blog. It sucked.

What happens?

(I don't have any light bulbs to spare.)

I was hoping gas and plasma were the names of new snake clones.

Maybe "Gaseous Snake"?

It probably means they don't know anything about it.

Defensive? Yeesh. Plasma is covered quite well in my Chemistry course that I'm doing.
