I just switched my keyboard to Dvorak

So I'm mostly just typing this as practise. It's still pretty hunt+peck right now (also I keep hitting "v" instead of "."), but I'm getting faster and it does feel more natural than qwerty, probably because a lot more of what you type is on home row.

The only real problem I'm having is that my "'" key keeps wanting to stick; but I think it's loosening up now. Anyways this is pretty neat.

Anyone else use Dvorak?

I have to use them at school all the time and my Linux computer at home, I personally like my Zboard at home that I plug into my laptop when it's sitting on my desk and find the older Dvorak ones a pain in the ***...

I don't think I've ever seen an apostrophe in quotation marks before.

I considered switching, then decided against it for now... but it would be intersting to hear you report how you've getting along in a months time, once you're used to the key positions.

I love QWERTY. I really love QWERTY. In fact, I probably love it a little too much, if you know what I mean.

I could never switch. :o

I'd like to take a crack at it if a keyboard with rearrangeable keys comes into my possession sometime in the future. Perhaps one of those OLED driven keyboards like the Optimus, if it ever reaches mass production and affordable prices.

Dvorak is a much better layout, but given that my hands stretch easily over the entire keyboard and my high dexterity and speed with my hands as it is, there is little practical benefit. I can type for hours with QWERTY without feeling any negative effects.

Just another thing that comes to mind...I used a natural keyboard for an extended period of time years ago, and I grew to liking it. But since then I've only used standard keyboards. I noticed a while ago that my hands are not rigidely straight in the standard keyboard position. My wrists are bent just like with a natural keyboard. Over time my hands moved apart into a more comfortable position, and the muscle memory of my fingers adjusted to the new angle. So I type at about 100 WPM on a regular, non-ergonomic keyboard in an ergonomic position. Just something interesting that I noticed. Anyone else find themselves in a similar position?

That said, modern ergonomic keyboards really are nice for extended use. Microsoft makes some nice ones. Unfortunately my hands have already adopted to this style, and since I never typed "properly" to begin with, I often find my right (dominant) hand reaching over to the side left of the split on such keyboards.

Emon, have you tried M$'s "Comfort curve"?

I always do like you on the ergonomic ones by reaching over the split. The comfort curve has a more ergonomic curve but not to the point of adding a split and without stretching the middle keys by a large amount.

I've found it to be really comfortable. not to mention that it has a key for the calculator right up above the num pad and that just rocks.

On topic, I've only ever used qwerty. I don't know that I've ever even see a Dvorak keyboard.

Hmm, that is super cool. I may consider something like that the next time I buy a keyboard. I prefer Logitech peripherals, because in my experience they are just built better.

Also, any CS/SE students at RIT know the keyboards the Sun Blade workstations use in GCCIS. Say what you want about their layout, but the feel of the keys and the tactile feedback of the buttons is the most amazing typing experience ever. There's enough feedback to feel it but it's soft enough to not provide a lot of resistence. Your fingers just glide over the thing as you type. It's like nothing I've ever used.
