Need a laptop for ~$1000
2006-09-30, 7:13 PM #1
I need to find a laptop that's reasonably good for gaming (should have a decent sound card as well) for $1000, or somewhere in that range. Weight isn't a huge issue, so if it weighs as much as a CRT display I don't really care. :P

The reason I'm asking here is I've discovered that it usually yields far more helpful results than me doing original research. Lols. .(

There really isn't such a thing as a laptop thats good or even decent for gaming, without some sort of trade off.

Sure you could have one with an amazing GPU.. oh, but there goes your battery life. Damn.

They have the ones with HUGE screens. But they're huge.

Laptops are AWESOME work machines. But a ****ty solution for a portable gamestation.

Oh right, I don't care about battery life either. :P

You're better off getting something like this for an audio solution.

You won't find any good internal sound devices.

Anyone know of a decent 14 inch laptop with a 7600, X1600, X1400 or 7400 in it?

14 inches seems to be the perfect size for a laptop. I think it's really stupid how people go out and buy 17 inchers. I really wish there were more 14 inch offerings.

You'll have better luck in the 15.4" range (which is ~14" tall).

Yeah. 14" is actually pretty small since the 14" is the diagonal measurement.
Pissed Off?

I have a 14" WS laptop, I'd say it's pretty much the perfect size as far as portability goes. The only thing I don't like is with a 1280x768 native res, I feel like I'm constantly scrolling when I read PDFs, a whole page can't fit on the screen unless I zoom out.

...that's the point. If I want big, I'll use my 20 inch LCD.

Yeah, that's not surprising, I'll probably get something like that eventually.

But I'm at the Dell site looking at their laptops, and I'm wondering if there's anything here that really needs to be better than it is...

-Intel® Core™ Duo Proc T2250 (1.73GHz/533MHz/2 X 1MB L2 Cache)
-Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
-15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA Display
-1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz, 2 Dimm
-80GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive (I would plan to get an external hard drive for storing documents and other data, so space isn't as much of an issue as speed)
-24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
-256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory™
-Integrated Audio

I haven't been keeping up at all with the new processors, so I have no idea how these dual-core or whatever things work, but somehow I suspect that would be the main bottleneck with those specs.

Except, even thought 17"ers are behemoths in their own right, they're infinitely more portable and also have infinitely more space for power than a 14" laptop and a 20" LCD screen.

They're good for LANs, desktop replacements, while still allowing a modicum of portability for school and whatnot. Is it the best solution for an ultraportable tech savant? No. Is it a good solution for some? Yes.

Speaking of, though, Core Duo and Core 2 Duo laptops are freaking awesome. Get a decent one with a gig of RAM that's a 13"er or a 12"er and, while you may not have a graphical powerhouse, you've easily got a super fast super portable computer.

Right now you can get $200 off $999 or $300 $1399 on Inspirons, so use that coupon if you decide to order it.

I have an XPS laptop, it's basically a huge skeetfest. In short. Per se.
