THE dumbest idea ever... (college suffering)
2006-10-02, 11:45 AM #1
Doing math on a computer is the most idiotic thing there is. It really is. Math has never been "hard" for me, I just don't like it. Well, now its HARD because I can't even figure out wtf is going on. Worst of all, I'm not even into a hard class yet, if I have to do harder math on the computer then I am screwed... its really discouraging me... *sigh* ... I've been on the same problem for 15 minutes... this is rediculous.

That does sound pretty dumb. I say, just work it out on a pad of paper before you enter it in the computer.

I agree, submitting math homework online is the worst idea ever. You have to put in the syntax exactly right or else you won't get the problem "right" (even though your "incorrect" form is perfectly valid).

my online math just has you write it on paper and scan/fax it in to the teacher

Math on a computer? Wow, here they not only make you do it all by hand, you're prohibited from using any sort of computation device more sophisticated than an abacus or a slide rule. It seems kind of silly to be doing calculus this way, anyways, considering that that's pretty much what computers were invented for... analog computers anyways.

Its stupid because it doesnt tell you WHAT answer it wants. When there are several ways to do it. So you end up missing it. To make it worse, if you look at examples, or ask it to show you how to work it, it changes the problem so you cant work it out for yourself. I like good ol bookwork where you keep the same problem and find the answer, and if you ask for help, the problem wont change once you figure it out so you can SEE what you did.

Could you atleast tell us what you are doing? Give us an example or such?
Nothing to see here, move along.

UGH... to make this worse, this is math I did in 8th grade. I could breeze through this is it wasn't on the computer. I passed Pre-Cal my Junior year with a high 80 something. This should be easier than not drowning in rain.

Edit: yea i will get the problem up.

LaTeX ftw.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Code:
Solve the system of equation by graphing.
Then, classify the system as consistent or
inconsistent and as a dependent or independent.

y = 2x - 5
x - y = 4

What is the solution of the system of equations?
(Type an ordered pair.)

Every problem is three answers, miss one you miss it all, and
then you get a new problem instead of finding out what you did
wrong. I can do the consistant or inconsistant and dep or indep...

Hell i can even find points but somehow they are never right. I graph, I susbstitute, I do it all... NEVER matches.

Back when I was in school and everything was done by hand, I was actually wondering how it would work someday with computers and math. I can see it just doesn't. :P

Spast... well i found the answer to that one, but i still have problems getting it to take my answers none the less.

The answer is (1, -3), right? (it should be unless that calc quiz burned out my math circuits)

And it doesn't accept that? Did you try putting it in brackets? Different seperators? (comma, space, etc.)

Just throwing out ideas here; it seems like you're having to go through a lot of trouble for an awfully simple question.

I duno why it wouldn't take my answer on that one, it gave me a different one and I did it just fine. It's not the first time it did that though. Just frustrates me so bad when I know my answer is right but somehow I'm not putting it in right or something, really makes you want to light your book on fire and quit.

OMG MORE PROBLEMS!

Code:
Solve by the substitution method.

6x - 4y = -46
7x + 72 = y

I wanna see if anyone can get the right answer, because I got the same answer over and over and over and my friend got the same answer as me (hes in some kinda advanced math at Texas A&M) and it said I was wrong.

x= -11
y= -5

6x - 4(7x+72) = -46
6x - 28x - 288 = -46
-22x - 288 = -46
x = -11

plug -11 in as x:

y= -5

Okay this is what I did, and my friend aparently, and we both got it wrong.

Code:
6x - 4(7x +72) = -46
6X - 28X + 288 = -46
-22x = -344
x = 15.18

Yeah.

This is like .. pretty simple, so there's probably something wrong with the computer system.

Forgetting to distribute a negative is probably one of the most common mistakes made, if that makes you feel better.
2006-10-02, 2:37 PM #35
I'm doing Physics on a computer. The whole system is a joke, though.

Sometimes it demands significant digits, other times it does not.

3.0 is sometimes wrong when 3. is correct, or vice versa. 3 and 3. are also two different things and the computer will reject the one it does not want.

The wierd thing is, though, is there is no standard. In one question you can be expected to put 3.0 and in an identical problem put 3.

Yeah. That was my little rant on computer math...
2006-10-02, 2:48 PM #36
I know how to do those. They are not hard, just watch out for the signs, a "-" can change the whole thing. Send one my way (pm).

No, that's not what he's talking about.

You're still supposed to do the homework and stuff by hand but you have to enter the answer into an online database using the exact notation they want you to. If you enter an "incorrect" answer you get it wrong (and if you time out you get it wrong too which happened to me quite a few times). It's generally a huge pain in the *** and just makes it so the professors and TAs don't have to grade homework pages by hand.

That's some lazy-*** professors there.

Tell me about it. We had an online math quiz, and I got a 0/5.

I had all the answers right! But instead of "undefined" he wanted "infinity" or he wanted decimal approximates instead of exact fractions, and a couple other instances of stupidity.

Yeah. It was dumb. And then I pizz-owned a problem with something I learned in BC calc last year that we hadn't done yet, and he wrote (this is on a written quiz) "Uh.. you can't do this yet. But.. whatever." *full credit*

I'm right there with you. The online homework is crap for every reason stated above.

If given the chance, I'd strangle the people who designed it, along with the morons who decided we HAD to use it.
