What five games will always be true to your soul?

1. Super Mario NES. -- This was the FIRST game I ever played ever. I was in love with the console I couldn't get away from the Nintendo.

2. Starcraft. -- Around 1998 I started to stop with the N64 and played Starcraft. I was only like 6 or 7 when I started this game. So much fun. I sometimes still play this.

3. Counter Strike. -- Come on! Every PC gamer must have played this game before. You get so gosh darn addicted to it, even if your a noob! Noobs learn people. Pros were noobs one time in their life =).

4. Super Smash Bros. -- Super Smash (N64 and Gamecube) was a great game invented by Nintendo. I remember all the fun times with friends and this great game.

5. World of Warcraft. -- I stopped playing this about a month ago. I had lots of fun and good times with my guild members. Especially with quests! Too bad I had to quit. School came.

Well now I shared the five games that are important to my gamer soul. I'd like to hear your five games.

1. Duke Nukem - first game I ever played on anything.
2. Jedi Knight - I still love it as much as ever.
3. Pokémon Blue/Red/Yellow - Was a MAJOR thing for me a while ago.
4. Warcraft III - My most anticipated game ever. Did not disappoint.
5. Age Of Empires II: The Age Of Kings - One of the best RTS games ever.

Honorable mentions: Starcraft and Day Of Defeat.

Hmm, only 5, eh? That's gonna be tough... my five, in no particular order:

Super Mario Bros. 3
This is the first game I ever owned. To this day, I still find it extremely fun. Unlike all the other games listed (and the ones not listed), this game never drew the game designer out of me. It's not that it didn't interest me -- far from it -- I guess I just felt the game was perfect as-is. In later Mario games, I didn't much go into game design mode as much as try and compile something with all the Mario elements in it. SMB3 was probably my "foundation" for such a thought, as it always felt the most expansive somehow. I loved the power-ups in the game, I loved its scale, and beating Bowser at the end felt climatic!

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
I had trouble between this one and "Link to the Past" which is the Zelda game that got me into the series. I'm still in love with the beginning of LttP, but OoT was one of those games I heavily got into game design mode. I drew and wrote out all sorts of notes on what could have been in OoT. I usually only do this sort of thing with games I really like, not "man this game is lame and this is how it could have been better." I really loved the world, the Z-targetting battle system, and when Gannondorf becomes Ganon. When I first saw that, I remembered having that epic climax feeling like with Bowser.

Goldeneye 007
Come on people. Do I really need to say why? Great singleplayer, awesome multiplayer. The game designer in me whipped out sheets of paper for levels and stuff on this game. This is also the game that got me interested in the Bond movies, but Goldeneye (the movie and videogame) are probably still my favorite. I also really liked how there was so much MORE stuff that could be uncovered with the Game Shark. It was like a new game! I'm sad I still can't get more people interested in sniper fights in the Cradle...

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2
Two words: Massassi Temple. Seriously, this game wouldn't be on my top 5 if it wasn't for the COMMUNITY. At first it was ye olde Zone, but then it became Massassi and all the new MP and SP levels and mods that were out (Saber Battle X woooooo!!!). I'm still think JediKnight was the best lightsaber game, though only through mods -- unmodded, I prefer Jedi Acadamy.

Half-Life
It was funny. At first, I couldn't get into the singleplayer of this game. I had bought it for the multiplayer, which I enjoyed a lot (at first, just DM, then TFC). Some years later, in college, I played through the singleplayer, and I really loved the immersion I got into it. The environment, the story and characters... it's not original by any means, but something about it really hooked me in. Once again, I've gone wild with not only designing maps and the like on paper for MP, but also in expanding the singleplayer. One of my favorite characters I've made, Yulee Morris, is heavily influenced from the Half-Life world.

hmm.... these will probably all be ancient!

Super Mario 1/3: my neighbour had 1, it was the reason I asked for NES, but mine came with 3. I much preferred 1, but both of them have a special place as being my first real game addictions.

Sonic (no idea which one, on the master system): my best friend and I, at around the age of 9, were sponsored for Comic Relief (big charity event in the UK) to listen to Take That (huuuuuge boy band) for 12 hours straight. we got through it by playing Sonic for 12 hours straight.

Double Dragon 2: The Revenge: Absolutely adored this. a friend and I spent an entire easter holiday doing nothing but eating lollies and playing this game. which is kinda scary since it took about 45 minutes to complete it.

Tony Hawks Pro Skater: I think it was around the second or third one that I got really in to this. would play with my ex-bf and his friends, it was the first PS game that I could ever steadily hold my own on. really satisfying to beat all the boys!

and of course, Starcraft: Flexor had to really talk me in to getting it, I'd only ever played one RTS before, and although I had enjoyed it, I still didn't think it would be my thing. oh how wrong I was. I have Warcraft III, but it just doesn't feel right.

yup, all ancient! I've completely stopped gaming in recent years (apart from the occassional bout of starcraft!)

Deus Ex: I know a game has really got into my soul when I remember almost perfectly where I was when I reached certain parts of the game and I certainly remember the climate, time, the position of my socks etc. when I played Deus Ex. Albeit the story isn't the greatest brain breaking saga of the century, it certainly is catchy and kept me interested. It is also very realistic, having no mysterious Force suddenly entering peoples lives and actually could happen. Of course then there's the gameplay that would still be innovative these days, albeit the graphics are more outdated than my pants. Got to love the music.

Duke Nukem 3D: This game just gets nostalgia flowing through every body part. The game of good times when hundreds of new levels popped out every week, and people had ultimate fun playing them online. It just feels like all these new Counter-Strike's and whatever have switched the feeling of pure fun to "OMG LOL NOOBS USE SHOTGUNS WALLHAX". However, how I really remember Duke Nukem 3D is the awesome single player campaign. Silly plot, but awesome level design, music, one-liners (yeah yeah ripoffs there and there) and... one of the best editors for any game ever. BUILD.

Jedi Knight and Mysteries of the Sith: Ah. The reason why I'm even here. In fact, I played MotS first and enjoyed it a lot and then got MotS but realized I also need JK so I got it too... it was really fun playing them back then, and I always wanted to make my own levels. Interestingly enough with all that motivation to make levels for them I never got anything done. That aside... JK and MotS are the only games besides Duke 3D from which I actually remember the fan-made (SP) levels first. Levels like Birth of a Mercenary, Leeza's Destiny, Siege on Derra IV... pure awesome. I actually get to feel really sad and nostalgic when realizing that nowadays it's kinda rare that these new neat SP levels are published for any game... all projects are "LOL WEAPON RENDERS" for 5 years and nothing ever gets done. Oh, and got to love the JED.

Final Fantasy VI-VII-VIII-IX: I just can't take one of these games off (yup, even IX) when talking about favorite FF games. Albeit FF6 IS LOL OLD, FF7 LOL OVERRATED, FF8 LOL JUNCTION SUX and FF9 LOL CHILDISH CHARACTERS I don't care and still like them all. So many good memories related to these games and their characters, it really feels kinda odd to feel something about a character in a bloody video game. And FF6's OST is just awesome. I haven't even played those games in years but even just remembering them makes me feel like I've just played through each one of them.

I have actually played so many games (and yet so little) that I'm having hard time choosing a fifth one... wait, this far I have 8 games. Anyhow, fifth entry (and 9th game) shall be

Command & Conquer: Red Alert: If there's ever gonna be a Soviet invasion it should have Hell March playing during it. For me war had never been so fun as in Red Alert. Building Mammoth Tanks to awesome music, frying stuff with Tesla coils, putting Tanya do neat sabotage work, attacking a base simultaneously with an atomic bomb, armada of cruisers and destroyers and massive human waves... oh man. Of course this means I've played more skirmish campaigns than the actual story stuff... but hell has it ever been fun. And still is.

Just to name a few.

On these notes

OMG LOL OLD GAMES ARE OLD AND SHOULDN'T BE PLAYED ANYMORE AHAHAHA LOL OMG

I'm going by series, since the games have stories that meld together into one pot of amazing awesome.

1. Deus Ex series, epic storytelling, unbelievable plot, amazing RPG elements, amazing voice acting
2. System Shock series, epic storytelling, unbelievable plot, amazing RPG elements, even better voice acting
3. Jedi Knight series, epic story and feel, memorable puzzles and innovative gameplay
4. Grim Fandango, the best adventure game ever. No, really, it is. Writing and dialogue that rivals Academy Award winning films from the past century. No, I'm not exaggerating, it really is that good. Also the voice acting is probably the best in any video game ever.
5. Knights of the Old Republic series, absolutely amazingly epic story, great voice acting, just...amazingly epic.

...

6. Zork series, adventure and puzzles that rival Myst
7. Space Quest series, absolutely hilarious adventure series with fantastic puzzles
8. Duke Nukem series, it's Duke...
9. X-Wing and TIE Fighter series, the best space simulations ever for reasons that would fill this page
10. Half-Life series, just plain fun
11. Wolfenstein series, just plain fun
12. Command & Conquer series, uh, one of the best RTS series of all time that focused on gameplay instead of tedious micromanagement
13. Unreal Tournament series, seriously badass fun
14. Quake series, classic deathmatch fun
15. Rainbow Six series, the best tactical shooters of all time. They have realism that put games like CS to complete shame without ruining the fun.
16. Call of Duty series, awesome cinematic WWII action
17. Thief series, pretty much invented the sneaker genre and stealth elements, still does stealth better than most modern games. Oh, and don't forget the completely innovative gameplay and expert storytelling
18. No One Lives Forever series, it's the ******* child of James Bond and Austin Powers. Semi-serious with lots of humor but a classic bond plot which is expertly told
19. Grand Theft Auto series, you get to roam cities, shoot gangsters, steel cars. Sex, drugs and rock 'n roll at its finest.
20. Splinter Cell series, the few games that have managed to do stealth correctly since Thief, even improving upon it. More innovative gameplay, fun fun fun

There are so many great games out there. I could probably cram my favorite games into a top 10 or 15 list though.

Mario Bros. (if I had to choose a specific one, it would be Mario 3)

Metroid (Super Metroid)

Smash Bros

Golden Axe Warrior (not to be confused with golden axe... it was an action rpg for the master system, and my first rpg)

Street Fighter (back when fighting games were cool, and you didn't have combos that were 15 button presses. God fighting games suck now)

Super Mario Bros 3 - seems to be a popular choice. One of the few NES games I've played all the way through.

Jedi Knight - I'm here, aren't I?

Command and Conquer - Yes, the original that started it all is still the best. Though if you wanted to go back far enough, Dune 2 was a blast. No box selection kinda sucked though.

Tie Fighter/X-Wing/Wing Commander 1 + Secret Missions - I spent endless time when I was young with these most excellent flight games. Wing Commander wins for being my favorite, followed very closely by Tie Fighter, then X-Wing.

Starship Titanic - A bit of an odd choice, I'll admit, but I loved this game. It's one of the few adventure games I really got into, and yes, I've played Grim Fandango. The humor in Starship Titanic is great, and having Douglas Adams on the creative team certainly doesn't hurt.

  • Deus Ex - Yes. Every time I replay Deus Ex I find something new. It's that awesome.
  • Splinter Cell - I'm a ninja at heart and Sam Fisher is the best ninja there is.
  • Call of Duty - I'm still amazed when I play this game at how well it sucks you in. And I've had some great times with the multiplayer.
  • Jedi Knight - Duh.
  • Civilization II - Replay!

Day of the Tentacle

The first adventure game I've played on the PC, this game really doesn't age. I've played it through and through, until I've lost the CD (it came with the PC, actually). Of course, since then, I've "reacquired" the game.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Another LucasArts classic, I remember this having a much darker setting than other adventure games of theirs I've played, and I remember this being a very immersive game. Well, for a 12-year old, at least.

Fallout 1 + 2

I've never replayed a game so many times. Very detailed worlds, characters, weapons. It felt more like an actual alternate universe than any other game I've ever played.

There was a real bond between the player and the NPCs (for example, Ian or the dog in the first game), and you didn't feel like you're out there doing someone's errands, like most RPGs make you feel. It felt like you were living your own bloody life and everything around was just... You know... The rest of the world.

Also, now that I think of it... Does anyone remember meeting at least one character in the Fallout universe who was happy (and not crazy at the same time)?

Planescape: Torment

Same things can be said about it like that of the Fallout games, except here you're really kept curious about the main storyline. The beauty of this game was in the little details - like the stories you would hear, the things people told you, the origins of people around you. And how all this was touched by you in one form or another, without you having any recollection of it. This game is the closest thing I've played that could be truly called a work of art.

Jedi Knight

Wanted it to the point of absurd after playing the demo, and thought this was the best thing since Dark Forces II when I finally got to it. The multiplayer was quite fun, too.

Also, other games I think I should note:

Deus Ex

Pretty much what the others said.

Sam & Max Hit The Road

Pure awesome, still is.

Protostar: War on the Frontier

For some reason, I loved the extreme size of this game's universe. Also, the artwork was very immersive.

Privateer 1 & 2

Interesting story (at least in 2, I don't remember caring for the story in the 1st game), nice universe, awesome art. All-round good games.

No Remorse

You play a genetically-engineered executioner clad in red armour. Lotsa explosions. Fun stuff. Too bad I can't make it run in Windows, even with the help of DOSBox and whatnot.

Oni

It got mediocre reviews, and most people don't like it for being anime, but I replayed it again and again. Very fun game, and I think the only PC game of it's kind (3D adventure/fighter).

Syndicate

You control a team of cyborgs in a futuristic city. I really liked the atmosphere and the presentation style of this game.

Flashback: A Quest for Identity

If you haven't played this, you lose.

Alone in the Dark (early series)

Apart from the newest installments, these were very atmospheric games.

Estetica

Freaking scary, immersive world. And also, in which over game can you turn yourself into a hamster?

I could probably name a few more, but I think I'll stop here.

Jurassic Park (on the Sega Genesis) - come on. you get to shoot dinosaurs with tranquilizer darts, or eat people. you can't tell me thats not awesome

Jedi Knight - duh

Deus Ex - i enjoyed the many ways i've plyed through both of them.

Uplink - its simple, but fun, but these days i find it hard to keep myself from using the cheat code to get better equipment.

- Streets of Rage series.
- the Mega Drive (Genesis) Sonic games, ie Sonic before they ruined everything
- Baldurs Gate Trilogy, epic of epic proportions
- Planescape: Torment, epic of personal proportions
- Fallout series, epic of post-apocalyptic proportions
- Final Fantasy (all games except Mystic Quest which sucked ***), epic of secret-ultra-hard-enemy proportions. Especially FF10, the Dark Aeons are tough.
- Diddy Kong Racing, I don't care what anybody says, this game was better than Mario Kart
- Jedi Knight, an FPS that didn't give me a headache to play it, intelligent level design that wasn't just about trying to scare you
- Deus Ex 1 AND 2, both games were excellent and interesting
- Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, despite being buggy and having numerous flaws, the game was a masterpiece.
- Pokémon RPGs, don't care that they're kiddy, they're awesome games.
- Uplink, super-simple but super-involving
- Grim Fandango, sweetness
- Jedi Outcast, i've never played a multiplayer game that I enjoyed more, i just love bouncing all over the place whilst capturing flags.
- Freelancer, awesome gameplay and story, let down only by the lack of interesting side-missions.
- Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64), just plain fun, excellent replay value.
- Super Mario 64, i haven't played it since completing it but everytime I think about it I remember how brilliant every single one of those worlds was.

1. Scorched Earth- My earilest (and best) memories of video games consist almost entirely of this game.

2. Jill of the Jungle- Once again, one of the first games I ever played. It holds a special place in my heart.

3. DF2:JK- The game which turned me into a gamer. Without this one I would have never gotten into PC gaming nor modding.

4. Halo- One of the few games that I really enjoyed as much as JK.

5. Splinter Cell- Chaos theory is the only one in the series that I own and it's one I just can't get enough of. Damn You Starforce!

1) Jedi Outcast - I say this for the amazing experience I had with clans and the online experience it provided. It is a game that has freakin' lightsabers but you actually do better based on skill and practice. Not just hack slash or run'n gun. The personal level of the Jedi Unleashed clan was amazing. Everyone knew each other and respected each other. Most of the original members are gone now. Wow, I'm getting all nastolgic now. I stopped playing due to boredom of the game; I constantly played.

2) Jedi Kight - this was awesome, but I then found out about user created content and the ability to do it yourself. More awesome.

3) Duke Nukem - First game I really played. Beat the whole shareware missions. I wonder what ever happens to Duke on the moon $19 later.

4) Halo - Hell, who hasn't had a blast with system linked Xboxs all night playing Halo. Do I even need to explain myself? Halo PC was a multiplayer orgy of goodness; however, not the same as a bunch of buddys playing together.

5) n64 Zelda Games

I really can't decide anymore. Runescape took over my life for a while. I can still talk to people about it. Chrono Trigger>=amazing. Golden Sun for GBA....... yeah.

1. Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. I played this when I was four on my Dad's 486. In 1997 I graduated to...

2. Jane's World War 2 fighters. I played this for ages.

3. Jedi Knight. Fun game. It would blue screen at first, so after a call to tech support, I downloaded a sound driver and broke my sounds for months. But the game worked. Being a n00b, I spent the next few months downloading random sound drivers off the Internet in the hopes that one would work.

4. MOHAA: Spearhead. I played many and hour on rifles-only servers with this game.

5. I've had a few other games I've really enjoyed but not really any that stand out enough to make this list.

I'll possibly elaborate later, but here are my five games that will stay in my heart forever. They have actually greatly affected me, and I'll never forget them. In no particular order:

Deus Ex: Amazing musical score, deep story, and the best gameplay I've experienced for a very long time.

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2: Amazing experience at the time I played it, and provided hours apon hours of fun online. Also led me to meet one of my current best friends, and we would role play in this game for hours on end every day.

World of Warcraft: Crack for a gamer, this game provided tons of fun for me in the past couple years. It's also let me meet many new friends. I've been in the guild that I'm currently in since they started the '40-man raids' and have cheered with them, shared frustration, and shared glory. Some of the best experiences in an online game I've ever had.

Warcraft II: Introduced me to the now loved (By me) RTS genre, and online gaming. I would play this game for hours on the HEAT network (No b.net version here, folks) and loved every bit of it.

Crystal Caves / Secret Agent / X-wing : All hold a special place because they were my main introduction to gaming. I played these when I was very young.

Honorable mentions:

Baldur's Gate / Diablo : Introduced me to RPG genre

TIE Fighter: A damn good game. Pretty much sums it up.

X-Wing Alliance: Will never forget the hatred I felt when I hypered into my old home. Blasted a lot of folks that day.

Rebel Assault 1: Another old game I'd play constantly when I was young.

Monkey Isle 3: I didn't get the honor of playing this in my childhood, but I've recently played it, and I regret not playing it earlier. Tons of fun.

Runescape: Although it's a POS game, it still introduced me into the wonderful world of MMORPGs. I admit, I did have fun at the time.

I've probably forgot a lot, but that's the jist of it.

Jedi Knight/MOTS - It's the game that got me into modding, modeling, level design, programming...almost everything I do. It's still fun after all these years.

Rogue Spear - The first game I ever played fanatically, that is, I was able to play the multiplayer for 12 hours straight. I love it for the map, "The Met," and everything that makes the earlier Rainbow 6 series games different from any other FPSs.

Call of Duty - My second fanatically played game, it has so much character besides being just so fun. The best part of the CoD series is that things are so unrealistic that you can make amazing shots that nobody should be able to make. Things like the left-lean glitch, and the obvious fact that jumping and spraying with the ppSh or Tommy will without fail get you a headshot before standing and scoping in give it so much character.

Super Smash Bros. - The sound effects, the fun to be had with friends, it's just so amazing. I don't even need to explain it.

Goldeneye - Between the most fun glitches in a game ever, the hilarious multiplayer characters, the seemingly infinite health, the karate chop, the crazy weapons like the grenade launcher and the remote mines, and the fact that every time I play multiplayer I end up yelling taunts in Boris' Russian accent, everything that would make me hate this game makes me love it more.

1. Final Fantasy VIII.
That game got to me on some sort of wierd emotional level during middle school. Wierd things happened. Top of the list....

2. JK/MotS.
I wasted a bazillion hours of my life over that game, and it still fills my heart with joy when I play it.

3. Age of Empires series.
The only reason I have any real life friends is because they would play Age of Empires with me. It really brought us all close together, and will always be True to my Gamer Soul.

4. Call of Duty 1 and 2
I always got a huge kick out of pwning people at this game online. It was really one of the few things in life that I can actually say I'm good at. Sports? No. Math? No. Anything? Not really. Call of Duty? Yes.

5. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
This was possibly the greatest childhood game I ever played. Yes, many were good, but this game really influenced the way I thought. All my art and ideas and everything stemmed from this game. Pirates and gators and monkeys and swashbuckling gunslinging action in creative new worlds. <3 (Actually, maybe this should be #1 and not #5. Hmm....)
