I have a complete sony system, and I must say, though the head-nit could use some work, they make considerably high-quality products.

I personally like Pioneer and Alpine the most, they've got the best sound output, and they both have some really good looking units as well.

But that's well besides the point... I personally can't say I've heard of Boss products, but I do know I have heard of Clarion, but never actually heard their products.

Personally the Boss sounds quite good, based on the specs, seems to have quite a few more features than the clarion. Personally, I would probably go with the clarion, simply because I trust it more, but with my sub-woofers, and dedicated sub-wooder pre-out would be slightly more beneficial, and would probably be the reason I'd take the Boss, plus the roads around here are rather bumpy, and the anti-skip would be beneficial too, but none of my headunits thus far have had anti-skip, and I haven't had any skipping problems. Personally I think you should just choose based on what features you do, and don't need. Everyone's got different opinions, so you'll just about always hear both good and bad things about each.

But I say go with the Clarion, so long as you don't have sub-woofers... which I assume you do not, I just like to have the ability to control the subs seperate from my speakers, it may not bother you.

Haven't heard of Boss. I bought a Clarion in 1996 and it's still going strong despite being swapped into and out of multiple vehicles, including off-road vehicles which see a lot of off-road use.

I have also used Sony and Pioneer, and I had nothing but problems with my top-of-the-line (at the time) sony deck. It wouldn't eject cds and the volume control broke. Thank goodness for the best buy 4 year warranty program (got a Pioneer replacement after the manufacturers warranty ran out and it broke, AGAIN). Pioneer I haven't had any problems with, EXCEPT for the fact that the face plate is a ***** to get off. I hate the flip down-removable ones from pioneer, they suck ***.

I would recommend visiting a shop and listening to and playing with various decks. You'll get a much better feel than from a web site.

Taking most of which into consideration, I would rather go with a Pioneer or even an Alpine myself, my dad had an alpine for some 4-6 years and it was great up until the screen went dead. However, I'm on a $240 budget for a head unit, front and rear speakers.... so as you can see, I'm stretching what I can get.

Stores, while they have the stuff there to test out for yourself, are often more expensive than something online. Most of you might say $240 wont buy me much, and I know that, but when you have NO system at all, anything beats the sound of wind blowing around your car as you go down the road.

Um, go to the store and TRY OUT the models you are interested in, then buy them from the internet. Hello?

Pioneer.

And if you're looking to buy online, go to http://www.crutchfield.com/ , they everything you need to install it, unlike most places. Can save you a LOT depending on what kinda car you've got.

haha, well considering I'd have to drive an hour just to find a store that actually carries the brands I would LIKE to get, its not exactly worth it.

Head Unit type doesnt even matter if you have a subwoofer. Just be sure whatever you buy has a built in Crossover. That way you can control all the tones in everything.
