Need a good free program to convert a mpg to wmv or avi

I'm doing a speech on movie cliches and I would like to be able to play some film clips directly off of my flash drive. I figure it will be better to directly play the clip from a video file instead of cycling through a bunch of DVDs and trying to get to the right spot. I have been able to rip a scene from a DVD to my hard drive, but it's in mpg format. When I try to convert it to wmv or avi through various programs, I seem to be unsuccessful. So does anyone know of a program I can use to do the conversion to wmv or avi successfully?

Forgot to mention Windows. Windows Movie Maker would be my first choice, but it doesn't support mpg it seems. I'll give a look into some of those other programs, thanks.

Hasn't failed me yet for video converting.

WinAVI would be perfect if it weren't for the fact that it has this stupid message in the middle of the clip. The only way I can remove it is to pay the $30. I can't get virtualdub to open the mpg file so now I'm trying trying MPlayer. I have no multimedia teacher so no luck there...

... You do know that there are alternative ways around that. Right?
