Battlefield 2142 Demo

Found here via fileshack, I've downloaded it and installed it once, but apparently my download was missing a file because it came up with a critical error and couldn't run.

Has anyone got this running? If so, what are your impressions?

I installed it, but haven't tried it yet..

I'm still ticked with EA that my BF2 stats from yesterday aren't there! I should have at least one more unlock by now.. :(

Didn't Yecti say Geek Squad got the demo a month or so ago? I'm pretty sure he said it blew.
I had a blog. It sucked.

I also heard from multiple sources that it blew and was not ready for release.

Well, there's a free demo linked in the first post. Why not find out for yourself? I'm having a lot of fun with it.

As a matter of fact I'm hardly surprised either. Battlefield 2, while a fun game was hardly ever polished and I personally think its far from being a technically well programmed game. The way higher graphic settings and anti aliasing deteriorate the game play significantly are testament enough of that.

I could play FEAR maxed out online with precision shooting and no lag, while I could never do precision shooting in Battlefield 2 with AA turned on and settings turned to high.

anyone got any minimum specs for this?

I don't really want to download a gigabyte file only to find out it wont run well enough to be fun.

There's not much info posted about the demo. I'm going to play it once I get home from work, I'll tell you how it runs on my comp (2500+ approx, 6800GT, 1gig of DDR400)

I was hugely unimpressed by the demo and have no plans to buy the game.

The 2nd vid Chaz posted looks beautiful :'(. My comp can't even handle republic commando.

It like battle field 2 with new skins and models. And a bit crappier.
2006-10-10, 2:55 PM #16
It's certainly an interesting looking Slideshow that kinda reminds me of this World War Two game that's way funner and runs better.

-I think that sums it up, pretty much.

It's nothing like Battlefield 2, what are you talking about.

Edit: At least, the main Titan mode isn't.

It's buggy, and the map they included sucks hard. I hope they include some better maps with the actual game, otherwise I doubt I'll be picking this up. Sad, because I was looking forward to it too.

I cant play for more than 1 minute before it crashes on me. It will load up all fine and dandy, and I can play for under 1 minute, but after that, crashes to desktop every time.

Good Lord. There's no such thing as a well programmed game these days. Game developers follow ****ty software development practices because they think they can rely on good hardware to fix their cruddy programming.
2006-10-10, 7:29 PM #26
Well I figured it out, if anyone is having that same problem I had. Just turn of the VoIP and it should stop crashing.

Come to think of it, BF1942 was shaky at times too. Lag + Aircraft Carrier = Tragedy.

-But this one's not just laggy with bad physics, this one's laggy with moderate physics and poor performance.
2006-10-10, 8:16 PM #28
Well, I've got it installed; it's been "optimizing shaders" for the past 15 minutes.

The best hardware will not fix most logical errors. Maybe games are crappy more because . . .

1. Code monkeys (game devs) and artists aren't trained, don't learn, or are not guided by leaders who use proper process.

2. The game company management sets deadlines for games to be built in timeframes that force developers to release a flawed but relatively complete product that can be sold now and patched later.

All of you. I said a while back that I wasn't all that interested because BF2 sucked so horribly that it's unlikely this would be anything more than a reskinned BF2 with mechs. I tried this demo: I was spot on. Neither this or BF2 feel half as polished as BF1942. But hey, it's EA. What can you expect?

Yes, according to one map, and a demo map at that, it's definitely a spot-on assumption.

Or, maybe, just maybe, you made that assumption because it's officially an expansion pack to BF2.

Epitome of intelligence there.
D E A T H
2006-10-10, 10:46 PM #39
Because it's an expansion pack, it's ok to have the same poor quality of it's root game? Correct me if I'm wrong, but expansion packs CAN improve upon the original engine, and at least the original game.

And the fact that it's an expansion shows that it was obviously rushed and tossed together. They wanted to make it a new game: But needed to release it sooner. Just a guess.

And yes, according to one map. My assumptions and this one map and the way it plays and feels versus a month of further developement? It'd be pretty hard to polish the game like the original was on release in a month or so's time.

As a hardcore sim pilot and fan of Battletech and the Mechwarrior games, from what I've seen, it won't hold a candle to the real thing.
