Taskbar Shuffle!

Like tabs in firefox, this program lets you move around the taskbar tab of your programs in windows! So far ive found it pretty helpful!

TinyResMeter
  • Allows you to monitor your system's condition.

AWC (Automatic Wallpaper Changer)
  • Give it a directory, and it'll shuffle through the images in there for wallpapers for a time interval you set.

Unlocker
  • If you've ever gotten those "cannot delete, file is in use by another program", this tells you what programs are holding onto that file and gives you ways to kill it.

ISO Recorder
  • Allows you to burn ISOs to CDs

MultiMon
  • Adds a (does not extend Windows') taskbar to other monitors.

Joytokey

Let's you assign your joypad buttons to key presses (multiple or single) or mouse movements and clicks.
It's useful for when you have a game that either doesnt use joypads or doesn't recognize your joypad.
It's also useful for making an analog stick control the mouse.
Also you can turn your controller into a remote control for winamp and the like.

I've found heaps of uses for this, you just have to apply enough thought to it =]

Scribus - Almost as good as adobe indesign, and the price is right.

Gimp - Almost as good as adobe photoshop, and the price is right.

Knoppix (Good rescue cd, and imo, works good as an installed debian-based system.

SuperTux - addictive super mario-esque game good for staving off boredom

Gnome Blackjack -- too bad this hasn't been ported to windows, as far as I know

Openoffice, 1.0 was good, 2.0 made it even better

Don't think anyone's mentioned PowerMenu yet. Yup.
2006-10-13, 10:06 PM #14
I've recently discovered Notepad2. I've always liked the Scintilla component for text editors. It's used in editors such as SciTE and Notepad++. SciTE is too minimal and a pain in the *** to configure. Notepad++ is bloated with a poor interface, ugly icons and a useless syntax designer that crashes. Notepad2, also using Scintilla, follows more the minimal philosophy of Notepad but adds usable, no-bloat features and has a clean interface. Way faster than the others, too.

Whoops, yeah I forgot OpenOffice... and Office 2007 beta (though it's not free anymore--costs $1.59 per product now--so I won't add it).

PowerMenu reminds me of this app: http://www.chime.tv/products/glass2k.shtml

Which is nice but it's just another little app like UberIcon and Taskbar Shuffle that adds a systray icon and a small number of useful features that other similar programs offer, but there's no one program that offers all of them. Other apps in this category include allSnap (http://www.cs.utoronto.ca/~iheckman/allsnap/), D-Color XP (http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/DColor-XP-Download-21009.html), VisualTaskTip (http://www.visualtasktips.com/), and VisualTooltip (http://chsalmon.club.fr/indexEng.html).

If you have money to spend, I find Mathematica, Matlab, and Photoshop to be excellent programs as well, though Photoshop doesn't run well under superior operating systems. :P

GIMP crashed my computer when I tried to install it, never worked well. Thankfully Photoshop fixed itself after a few days.

Yeah, saying GIMP is as good as photoshop is like saying a Geo Metro is as good as a Ferrari.

I mean, they both drive you places.

I don't use either. I memorize all appointments, meetings, things to do, etc. I write all of my code in nvi. Once in a while, I will write something quick in Kate, but not often.

I do most of my file management in the terminal, but Konqueror is a fine file manager. If I'm organizing pictures or movies, its nice to have the preview instead of just a file name.

I actually prefer Konqueror as a browser over Firefox. Too bad I can't use it. I can't wait until I get all the parts to build a computer that can run KDE reasonably.

KIO-slaves are the best thing since breathable atmosphere. Being able to open a file over fish (~sftp), modify it, and save it directly back kicks *soo* much ***...

Eh, it is just as easy for me to SSH into the box and edit the file. I don't usually SSH into a box just to edit one file, so it doesn't matter much to me.

Yeah, I just SSH to my server and do my editing in nano.
