After nearly 4 years with the same 15 gig hard drive, I finally cracked. I just bought a 160 gig hard drive from Newegg for $91, and if games start getting big enough that it only takes 3 or 4 to soak up that HD (like it does to take up my current HD) within the next 2 or 3 years, I may just have to give up PC gaming...

Right now, UT2004, the 5.5 gig whopper of a game, consumes over a third of my current hard drive. Add Red Orchestra to that, and it just gets ridiculous. I have that game installed at the sacrifice of Battlefield 1942 and expansions, C&C Renegade, Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy (and JK too... though I could squeez it on here right now, I couldnt get too many mods to go with it).

I still remember when I first got this thing, thinking "15 gigabytes? There is no way I'll ever need another hard drive with that monster!" heh. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]

Pfft.. you can NEVER have too much hard drive space. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I've just added a 200MB Seagate IDE as a second drive to my existing piddly 80GB. The 80GB is just for the OS & programs, the 200GB purely for video capture and editing. The 200GB is currently 80% full. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

I can remember the "good old days", when the idea of hard drives exceeding a gig was absurd and 640k really was good enough for everyone...

The University of North Carolina has finally found a network server that, although missing for four years, hasn't missed a packet in all that time. Try as they might, university administrators couldn't find the server. Working with Novell Inc., IT workers tracked it down by meticulously following cable until they literally ran into a wall. The server had been mistakenly sealed behind drywall by maintenance workers.

Why do you get upset? Games have better graphics, bigger maps, more engrossing worlds, higher quality textures and in a lot of cases, just more of everything. I don't get why you're mad about that... of course it will take up more space.

I got a 40 Gig, and a 120 Gig. The 40 gig is partitioned like this:

/dev/hda1 - Windows - 4 Gigs
/dev/hda2 - Linux ReiserFS - 9 Gigs
/dev/hda3 - Linux Swap - 1 Gig
/dev/hda4 - Anime - The Rest

My 120 Gig is just one big hard drive for programs and anime. It currently has a folder of 20Gigs of anime, and the rest is MP3s, ISOs of my CDs, and games. It's currently 3GIGs short of full.

Networked is the family computer, which unbeknownst to them, is partitioned like this:

60Gig
/dev/hda1 - Windows - 4 Gigs
/dev/hda2 - Linux ReiserFS - 10 gigs
/dev/hda3 - Linux Swap - 1 Gig
/dev/hda4 - More Anime - The rest

Both computers are always on, so I just unload the anime I am not watching or editing, and throw it on there. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

My family has a 6 GB hard drive in one comp, and then a 120 MB hard drive in the 386.

My computer has 40 gigs, partitioned:

~10 GB - Debian Linux
~500 MB - Linux Swap
The rest - Windows XP Pro

I have about 9 Gigs left on my XP partition, but then again, I only have about a quarter of my games currently installed. And I got rid of America's Army because I never played it enough to justify the gig it took up.

Gonna get me a few 200 gig drives to put in a file storage/3d rendering comp though. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

My first memory of the big file size hit was when I downloaded Star Trek Armada Demo. Back then it was huge, 72 MB. Biggest demo of all in the day. Then all of a sudden UT2k3 came out at 3 Gigs, JO with mods was 3 gigs. UT2k4 is 5.5 Gigs and with mods its like 8 gigs. Insano.

By the time games take up forty gig, drives in the multiple terrabytes will be hard drives, cpus will be about 50 gigahertz, cd drives will be useing the next thing after the upcoming blue lazer discs, video cards will have the power to render today's cgi elements in movies within minutes, RAM wil be in the gigs and all moniters will have immense resolution.

Well, assuming Moore's Law holds true for games, then it will be about 6 more years before top-end games take up 40 gigs. A good CPU would be about 20 Ghz, RAM would be around 4 or 8 gigs, and HDs would have about 2 Tb of space. Monitors probably won't have much more resolution than you see today, but the standard will have improved (and most likely all monitors will be widescreen, or maybe 3D). CDs will probably still be blu-ray though.

Kyle, and Alpha, are you on CRACK? You know that current procs are still in the 3 ghz area, if not lower (AMDs/lowend Pentiums), and that they're only gonna go up a few GHz right? Why? Because why have a brute force processor when you can have a more efficient processor.
And RAM in the GIGS? Doubtful. 2 GIG sticks will probably be standard, if even that much. 512 has been the reccommended amount of RAM for a LOOOOONG time. And with GDDR2 and GDDR3 I don't really see that raising too much.
Terabyte HDD's? Maybe. More likely 500 GBs will be like today's 80-120 GB, and 250 will be like 30 or 40. Eventually people are going to start compressing their textures.

Holy crap... they sell them that low now? And to think I bought a 80 gig for about the same price! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/mad.gif]

...Anyway, I've had my 80 gig hard drive for about a few months now and I only managed to use up only half of it so far. It is a good thing I got the 80 gig because I was going to settle for a 40 gig before deciding to get the 80 gig. To think I use to have a 20 gig and thought "I'll never fill this up!". That same hard drive only had no more than 600 megs left because Windows XP keeps sucking up so much space, no matter how many times I dump the temp and internet temp folders.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore's_Law

I was actually being conservative when I said 6 years (doubling period would be 2 years). This is assuming that a top-end game today takes 5 gigs, and therefore after 3 doubling periods would take up 40 gigs (this, of course, assumes that the doubling period for games is the same for processors, RAM, etc.) If the doubling period is only, in fact, 18 months, then we should be seeing 40 gig games in only 4.5 years. Now, apply the three doublings (8x) to everything else:

Top-end now Top-end in 4.5 years
processor 3 Ghz 24 Ghz
RAM 512-1024 Mb 4-8 Gb
HD space 250 Gb 2 Tb

That's simple extrapolation. For things like CDs and monitors, it's more of a guess based on the fact that 4.5 years isn't really long enough to develop entirely new technologies, and blu-ray DVDs and 3D monitors are just starting to come out (so maybe they will be mainstream in 4.5 years).

See the problem about applying Moore's Law to processors is the fact that there is a top speed for a processor. You can only make transitors so small. I was talking to a tech from my school's county who used to work for Alienware testing the new hardware that came in.
He explained that the current problem that they are having now is when the transistors switch, they also apply a small current to the transistors around it. If enough current builds, the transistors will begin to look as if they are charged when only the surrounding ones should be. If you try to fix that, it makes the processor slower.
There is no technology yet for a new processor design, so no, in 4.5 years, we will not have a 20Ghz Processor.

You see kyle, Moore's law forgets to take into account business, design, and efficiency of processors. Besides that, P4's stayed at a max of 3.0-3.2 GHz for roughly 18 months I'd say.
