new laptop
2006-10-18, 2:26 PM #1
Im at work and all 3 of my computers at home are nuked and wont start for some reason so I bought a new laptop. It is an intel core 2 duo (2.16ghz, 4mb cache, 667mhz) with 2gb DDR ram, and a 256mb video card. Im not sure what I ordered though. Can someone tell me why its not pentium 4 and if it will be as fast as my computers at home that are 3.6ghz with HT?

Anyways, post your specs

Did you buy an apple?
2006-10-18, 2:33 PM #3
No, I bought it from Dell. I hate apples. my main question is when I was customizing it the Ghz wouldnt go higher than 2.16 and that was odd since the last time I ordered a computer I could go as high as 3.6. And then I see this new technology called Core 2 Duo and decided to ask Massassi if its comparable with the old structure?

Even Gala and Fuji? I really like those :( Granny Smith suck fresh, but they are great in pie.

With such a clever person as Brian running this place, it's a wonder we're all still here.

Core 2 is a new brand of processor cores released by Intel (I believe)

Duo means that there are two of them.

I don't really fully understand this Duo Core technology. From what I've heard, it helps run mulitple programs at one time but doesn't actually combine processing power on one task?

To answer your question, it's not a Pentium 4, because Core 2 Duo is superior. Find out more about Core 2 Duo.

The actual clockspeed is not a good indicator of performance. A Core 2 Duo is was more efficient than a Pentium 4, when comparing them clock to clock. The Core 2 Duo will most likely clobber all of you machines at home.

Sure, it is still an i386 machine. The only difference is that you have two processors in one. Should improve multitasking for you.

Well, first off a P4 would be a terrible CPU for a laptop because it would produce too much heat. The C2D is really power efficient, however, so that was a good choice. Also, your C2D will completely demolish your Pentium 4. No question. It's also duel core, but even if it wasn't it would still win by vast margins. It's basically Pentium 5. Except it's not, because it's replacing Pentiums. Really, really good CPU.

No it's not, it's basically the next generation M Processor which Intel finally decided to replace the Pentium architecture with.

Why would you buy something you know nothing about?

I'm guessing because that's all they offer these days. At least in high-end laptops.

Its good for programs especially compiled to take advantage of it (like a lot of next generation software/games). Each program can be broken up into a bunch of instructions waiting to be executed. So while the primary processor is doing stuff, the other processor can go ahead execute instructions later in the list that don't depend on the results from the previous instructions.

Bottom line: that laptop has good specs, you'll be happy with it. If you can't appreciate it, send it to me, I'll be glad to send you my Sempron.

Ok thanks I figured out that its a really good system. I bought something I knew nothing about because I needed a good system so I just clicked the max options.
