Vista looks nice, but what is so great about it? People will have to get better PC specs and I am sure things will slow down. I am unhappy with this new product.

Who really cares about transparent windows?

Thank you.

Ha! I'm the first one who thinks it's going to be great.

BET YOU DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING!

Or something.

:)

It's about more than transparent windows, man. It's gonna have a whole new relational file system; it'll be AWESOME.

Oh, wait. :v:

I'll wait until they release a few service packs, as they invariably will.

Well, I'd skip it entirely if it weren't for things like DX10. Since I'll be able to get a free copy from MSDN:AA, it's not so bad. If the gaming industry were moving to DX10 and I was forced to pay for Vista, I'd be livid.

^^^^ And I just HAD to graduate THIS semester. No more MSDN:AA :(

Stupid, unintelligent post.

Too bad MS is going to do their *****y forced-standards-migration thing. I would've loved to stick with win2K for a couple more years. Except now no one remembers what it is and it can't do many things anymore because XP has eaten and converted everything.

The vast majority of customers only upgrade their OS when they buy a new PC. The system requirements for Vista are not that high, compared to XP, which can run on a Pentium II.

Why? Because of the optional, very fast 3D accelerated GUI? You can shut it off, you know. And how can you be unhappy? You haven't even used it yet.

 If you think Vista is nothing more than a GUI upgrade, you need to stop reading Slashdot. Vista has a whole slew of improvements in security, memory management and other areas.

Summary of this post: Warlockmish has no idea what he's talking about.

Isn't this identical to all the posting that went on about XP?

Oh yeah, it is!

Shut up.

When you have glass turned on but transparency turned off it looks quite pretty.

When I played around with it it was insanely smooth and slick, i'm talking speed-wise not "feel". It may require higher specs but it actually takes advantage of them. You see software tends to not scale that well, so you can throw all the hardware you want at XP and it won't improve in performance enough to justify the expense. Newer operating systems take advantage of newer hardware so whilst the bottom-line for running the operating system is lower they take better advantage of improving hardware.

Sticking with an old operating system is silly, especially if you're upgrading hardware at all, the question should only be about which modern OS you use.

I see the same thing happening with Vista that happened with Windows2000/XP.

When XP came out, everyone swore by 2000, saying the extra GUI crap and all the stupid changes ruined to OS.

6 months later, almost everyone had XP, and those that didn't were being reminded of their poor choice every time they mentioned it.

I expect something similar will happen with Vista also. It'll come to a point where everyone is using Vista, and XP will be left behind, for better or for worse.

I should never post about technology related stuff while under the influence of wine. I sounded like a bloody neckbearded /. user.

However I still retain the unimpressed factor. I just KNOW the UAC is going to bug the ever living **** out of people. I do see security improvements. I read not too long ago (from SA I think) an article about the difficulty it is to install toolbars on IE 7. It was harder to put toolbars on IE 7. So that's a plus. I'll admit the new skin does look neat. I just think that costs will be greater than benefits with Vista especially MS's new (and ridiculous) licensing standards

I'll probably try getting one when Bioshock and Alan Wake are close to their release.

I currently have no intention of ever getting it.

Though I'll probably be forced to eventualy, unless linux and because enough of a viable option before then.

But it probably won't.

I don't plan on getting it, but that's because I don't know anything about it and can't be bothered forking out all that cash for a new OS when I have one that works perfectly fine.
nope.

I'll wait til I can get it free from my school and install it on boot camp.

Vista is very nice. The SuperFetch or whatever is very noticable... Visual Studio 2005 and Firefox with lots of extensions only take a few seconds apiece to start up.

One Note: If you have a series 6 GeForce card, don't grab the drivers from nVidia's site... they will cause problems with series 6 cards (video overlay doesn't work, drivers will suck up CPU if you try to use it). Get the 96.85 drivers, they solve this problem.

(This problem also happens in XP, but the latest bleeding-edge XP drivers, 95.94, don't solve this problem, I had to roll all the way back to 82.xx drivers.)

The only real problems with Vista I've had is that 1) The Games Explorer doesn't work in this version... it worked fine in RC1 though. Weird. 2) Speech recognition STILL doesn't work with my integrated audip, it didn't in RC1 either... it claims I don't have an audio device. Yet I have drivers and everything.

I'll get it eventually, but I'm in no hurry whatsoever. I'll probably be with Dredd waiting for several service packs.

One of the things that bothers me a little is the new EULA where it states that you can only transfer your copy of Windows to another computer once. If Vista is going to stay around for a while I know I'm going to upgrade my computer more than once, and I'm not really sure what the limits are. I've read that it will have an algorithm checking your hardware on boot to see if anything has changed, and if so much has changed then it's a "new computer."

Granted I haven't found specifics on the algorithm, but I'm still a little apprehensive. I'm assuming that changing the CPU and the motherboard probably qualify as a "new computer," but what if I want to upgrade my hard drive; or my video card, can I upgrade my video card only so many times before I have to buy a new copy of Vista? Unless something changes, I just going to sit back and let everyonce give it a go first.
