...how would you rather die? Me, I can't decide. They both suck pretty hard. I think in the end I might go with drowning. I don't know why. Maybe because it doesn't involve such physical pain. Also, after a while of drowning don't you pass out or something? I freak out when I can't catch my breath, it really scares me a lot, but I just imagine it sucking less than slowly burning.
Think while it's still legal.

I would rather burn.

My thinking for this poll was:

Die tied to a stake

or

Someone holds your head underwater

Even in normal circumstances, I'd rather die by fire than water.

Also, doesn't the smoke usually kill people anyway, not the flames?

Only if you're not actually on fire.
Burning would be a hell of a lot more painful then drowning, and the pain would go on for longer.

Burning at a stake.

I hear drowning is sort of calming once you're gag reflex shuts down. You just feel the water flow into your lungs and then you pass out.

Though I've always wanted to die in an explosion. Just like "pop" and I'm ashes :D

Yeah, an explosion would be nice and fast so long as your near enough the blast.
A shot to the head would also be nice and quick.
Poison would be slow and painful, but still not as painful as burning.

It comes down to what you're more afraid of: Pain or Hopelessnes. I don't really have a problem with either, as I'd just let myself sink in the water or ignore the pain of the fire... but I'd eventually break with the fire, so the water is preferred.

If you're in a fire, it's the smoke that kills you, not the fire itself, and I think that wouldn't be as bad as drowning. Holding you're breath as long as you can, know that you'll be taking in a lung full of water would suck.

Burning, probably.

Drowning is probably the feeling of inhaling water except lots of times worse, so I don't want to experience that.

If you're in a house that's on fire, yes, the smoke will kill you. If you're ON fire you will burn to death.
And smoke inhalation would be like drowning in the sense you describe it. Except the difference is when you finally do start breathing in the smoke it will take longer to kill you, thus more painful.

Even when you are burnt at a stake you die or pass out because of the smoke before actually burning to death. I guess depending on how the pile of wood has been constructed there could be some pain before that, though.

Drowning does sound a somewhat lonesome and cold way of dying, far less heroic than burning to death. Also, drowning doesn't actually allow for much variety, whereas burning could actually be really quick with just seconds of pain (explosion), or slow if somebody burned you with a blowtorch, or somewhat like drowning yet less horrible if the smoke killed you in a disaster (I assume breathing gas is less awfully than trying to inhale liquid).

If you're actually lit up, it's probably going to be a hell of a lot more painful than drowning. Passed out, not so much.

Indeed. But traditionally when they were burning witches at a stake, there was a good pile of wood and the stake on top and in the middle of it. So, there would be already lots of smoke before the flames actually reached you. I once read about this stuff in a popular science mag, and it seemed to make sense.

not to mention hot burning smoke is going to hurt when your coughing your lungs out.. then shortly thereafter your skin melts and you are burned up..

Id rather drown

Exploding isn't really burning to death. It's exploding.

I would guess it depends on how quickly your brain shuts down your pain reception. Also, minor burns hurt more than major ones since major burns just destroy your nerve endings.

I'd heard that drowning is one of the most painful ways to die unless you accept that it's happening and you just go with it.

Not sure, drowning seems like a bit of a scary way to go, if you're burning you'll probably have hope right until the end.

Burning, for sure. For drowning, the feeling of a foreign substance entering your lungs and staying there would be awful, plus the feeling of your chest collapsing.

Burning, however, gives me the chance to set others on fire.

I it's hot enough, you're body will shut down in just a couple of seconds. Also, the CO will put you out pretty fast too.

under what circumstance would I have to choose? If someone was pointing a gun at me and asked me?

I'd try to escape and probably die from it. But at least I'd die with honour. :P

Oops, I chose drowning in the poll because I thought it was how I would least rather die.

I'd choose burning rather than drowning simply because drowning freaks the crap out of me.

Underwater related deaths tend to be less painful and is the "softer" way to go.

Drowning isn't painful once your lungs fill with water. It’s the part air and part water mixture that is harsh on your lungs.
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

What difference does it make how many loved ones you have and how many achievments you have at the time of your death? None of that matters anymore.

I like Jim's sig: Eat right, exercise, die anyway. This applies here.

You heard this from drowning victims eh?

Burning wouldn't be that painful, your nerves would be rapidly destroyed. Drowning would be similar to asphyxiation.

I'd take burning then drowning.

Why think about the way you die? If you die you die. And trust me drowning isn't "good feeling." I almost drowned like when I was five. It's a horrible feeling knowing you can't breath. Especially afterwards, you either pass out and need CPR or you start puking water and the food you ate earlier (this was my case). Thankfully my cousin pulled me out of the water (I was pretty darn light) and then I started to puke everywhere.

Burning? Yeah you will have a chance to live if your are in a burning place. Well you can live but who wants to have burning scars all over them? Life would be harder because many people out there discriminate others just because burn victims look different. But I would rather live than die in a fire.

Death will come, and you never know in what form. So enjoy life while you are alive because there are tons of great things you can think of and do instead of thinking of death.

Screw that, I don't want everyone I love crying around me while I cark it. It's torture for me and torture for them.

I'm going out in a motorcycle accident in about ten years. I'll try not to take too many out with me..
