In the US, the 20GB version will retail for $499, and the 60GB version will retail for $599. In Europe, the 20GB version will retail for 499 euros, and the 60GB version will retail for 599 euros.

WTF? 499 and 599 euros are $633 and $760 respectively. I hope this is some kind of a stupid mistake.

That's usually how video games and consoles are priced. No jokes here. It isn't as drastic as it sounds though. It kind of evens out. Minimum wage is actually higher in most parts of Europe than it is in the US, so compare making around 9 euros an hour to making 8 dollars an hour. (At least that's the way I see it. I may be very wrong.)
Think while it's still legal.

Yeah, but most people have much higher taxes than we do also >.>

At $8.00/hr minimum wage, assuming people who earn minimum wage don't pay taxes, that's about 3.75 weeks of work just to afford the Playstation 3.

Minimum wage has nothing to do with the pricing for the simple reason that these people would not be able to afford the Playstation 3, regardless of how many extra euros they make. Electronics companies have always price gouged in Europe. The only reason they don't do it in North America is because the market backlash would be crippling.

Which is why I won't be buying a PS3. If (big if) I do buy a next gen console it will likely be the budget Wii :)

Edit:

I read somwhere that you will be able to plug a USB HDD into the PS3 to expand its memory. If that is the only difference between the two, you can likely save a bob or two on space.

if any system is going to win this war, it's probably going to be the one that is most reasonably priced.. like the Wii.. xbox price isn't terrible. I heard this coming year there are going to be HD-DVD upgrades for the 360, may bump up the price

Depending on how much a BD player or drive costs when it comes time to me wanting one, I may or may not buy PS3.
<Lyme> I got Fight Club for 6.98 at walmart.

Hmm....
The point is moot, because you will not be able to find either of these things.

Blu-ray is going to lose the battle, and badly, if the price of the hardware doesn't come down fast. And this is the sad bit - the PS3 is actually driving the cost of that hardware UP. Microsoft knows what it's doing, it wouldn't surprise me to see a 360 hddvd player extension that is also PC compatible. And microsoft can afford to play the 'sell at a loss' game a lot longer than Sony can. They have a whole other monopoly to sustain their foray into the console market. So, you aren't going to find any movies on blu-ray anyway. Might as well jump on hddvd now, and avoid spending money on a failing technology. I mourn my betamax tapes. And my laser discs.
Wikissassi sucks.

**** gaming. I'm going to focus on getting an education, a career, and then maybe entertainment in another decade or so. I'm out of this war. Game over, man. PS4, here I come.

PS4? wow, talk about sony fanboy, you don't even know what consoles it'll be competing with =p

Moderation has been my rule for a while now. It's not too bad, though I do miss the cutting edge from time to time.

As for the Sony fanboy image....I hadn't thought of that! I've just trusted sony for so long that the comment came naturally. We'll see what Nintendo brings to the table, though.
2006-10-27, 10:27 PM #23
moderation in -everything- if you go a whole decade without any form of entertainment, you are going to be loopy.

/me looks at the local Best Buy

/me looks at Tiberium's post

/me is radically confused, since the UMDs he saw at Best Buy must not exist! :psyduck:

UMD hasn't failed, but it hasn't succeeded.

It's a very good idea, with very poor pricing.

UMD Movies are dying slowly, but I don't see why UMD Games would suddenly die, considering it's the only real way to play games on the PSP...

That's like saying GD-ROM failed on the Dreamcast because nothing else used it. >.>
2006-10-28, 8:50 AM #28
I meant movies. Of course the games aren't going to die :P (yet?)

The thing with UMD movies is more of a "Why should I buy something I can only watch on a PSP when I can buy a DVD and watch it on a DVD player with a larger viewing screen?"

At least that was my opinion when I saw PSP movies, unless there's some other hardware that can use UMD movie disks that I'm not aware of ?

That said, I'm waiting until there's more of a selection of games on all systems before I even think about thinking of getting a next gen system. I'm saving up for a new computer, so that's where all excess money I have goes at the moment anyway. I havn't even been following anything about next generation gaming.

We had people lining up outside Toys R Us, camping out for the PS3/Wii presells we're doing tomorrow.

To bad we only have 6 PS3 and 15 Wii to presell.

Just thought I'd mention Sony has this rather disturbing clip as a part of the PS3 ad campaign. And although I agree with one of the YouTube comments that said it's an Odyssey 2001 reference, it's still not particularly pleasant.

I've had my Wii preordered from a distributor for the past month and a half. I'm getting one, guaranteed :D
2006-10-29, 6:53 AM #34
I'm going to have to wait a few weeks after release to get one, because I am seriously broke right now. :(

Youtube's being stupid for me right now, but is that the one with the baby?

Yeah, that freaked me OUT. My dad was like "Who the HELL allowed it to be made?"

It really does freak me out.
I had a blog. It sucked.
2006-10-29, 1:15 PM #36
Yeah, it's the one with the baby. They actually have some really cool ads, and some absolutely unrelated ones (like the one with all the stuff in some granny's house exploding), so I think maybe they're trying a little bit too hard. However, people definetly notice their ads - so I guess they're doing something right.

Maybe sony truly has diven off the deep end.
