Credit to NBC for turning the show down. A lot of people are going to watch it, and NBC should be commended for sticking to its principles despite the chance to land a very popular (if screwed-up) special.

There was a $33.5 million judgement leveled against him in a civil suit after the murder trial of which he has paid exactly $0 to the Brown family.

I believe that in Britain there was talk of removing double jeopardy rights if the evidence against you was overwhelming, not sure what came of that.
