problem with building pc
2004-07-07, 12:16 PM #1
I just built a new system with the following components:

Abit KV8 754
AMD64 3400+
512 kingston ddr400
9800pro
80gb western digital hdd
480watt thermaltake psu
MSI cdrw

when the system boots up, there are infinate long beeps. I have tried swapping the graphics card. I assume that the cpu is properly installed as it went in really easy, and all seemed to fit using the default heatsink. all of the power/led chassis stuff is in correctly, the cmos has been reset. CPU and mobo fans are plugged in and working. The hdd is set to master and plugged into IDE1. Everything seems to be done, what could we be missing/what could be wrong?

EXACT same thing happened to me, you have wires criss-crossed. (Not sure which ones) Make sure you know what you are doing, if not spend the cash to have it built for you. Better that then a broken PC.

I made a thread, that turned into the debate, so I made a second thread, that turned into a debate, then I made a third thread, that caught on fire, burned down, got flamed, crapped on, bashed, then turned into a debate...but the fourth one, the fourth one stayed on topic!

which wires could it be? I'm pretty sure I checked the manual carefully and put them all in the right place. Thanks for the responce.

Alright, those beeps? Morris code. If you look in your mobo's manual it'll tell you the problem depending on the beep sequence. Copy it down, look it up, fix. Should work.

we already checked abit's site for the code but couldnt find it, and it's not in the manual. Also, the beeps are infinate, not a series like on most mobos. Thanks again.

Yoshi when this happened to me I checked up on that. It didn't help. Like he said it doesn't stop, it just keeps going and going and going. Either your cords are tangled or you might be overheating something....or both.

Hrm...try making sure the processor is in firmly... Because really, all you need to post is the processor and the BIOS, so those should be the two components to see if they're messed...maybe like SAJN said a crossed wire with the power supply.

I doubt anything is overheating because installing the cpu went fine, it just slotted into place perfectly and the clip came down without any touble. The heatsink was straightforward too, and it came with thermal compound stuff on it.

I also dont see how a wire could b crossed...do you mean that the actual wire they provide is crossed as in has been put onto the wrong part of the plug thing, or do you mean I have manually put something into the wrong place? I have spent the last 2 hours going over it all checking every connection..

Ahh, the dreaded BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP etc.

That's generally a memory issue. First check to make sure it's all snapped down correctly. Try switching slots, etc. Try other memory if you have any other DDR sitting around(even if it's slower, you can still use it to see if the system will boot). Could very well be that you got DOA memory. Pretty common issue really.

The best way is to take everything off that isn't need to POST (Power On Self Test). Then one-by-one add your components and see if it boots.

Try resetting the mobo by taking out the battery and putting back in.

Put in just the cpu, RAM, and video card, and see if it boots.

Western Digital Hard Drive? If you only have one hard drive in your computer, make sure there are no jumpers on the hard drive. That little bugger cost me $70 in additional parts that I didn't need because I thought something else was causing a computer not to boot. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

Could it be your RAM? I thought one of the AMD 64's required Registered DDR RAM, so maybe yours isnt and it is conflicting. That might only have been for the FX line of AMD chips though, not sure.

What is the FSB of the +3400? You might want to make sure your mobo can support the FSB speed and the RAM is atleast the same speed as well.

If you still havent fixed it, do you have access to a friend or family member's PC? You can easily test components like RAM, video card, and hard drive in another PC, thereby reducing your list of possible culprits.

That's more correct than you'd imagine. The initial 2 sticks of RAM I got for this PC from Crucial were defective... about a week after I put everything together I would get random shutdowns, hardlocks, etc. Traced it down to bad RAM, as sticks from another PC (which also happened to be Crucial RAM) worked flawlessly. It just happens.

Yeah, it's definately a memory problem. I had the same problem with this PC when I bought unbuffered RAM for my motherboard which, as it turns out, only supports buffered RAM.

ok,thanks for all the help. I'm pretty sure that it is a memory issue now. A lot of people seem to be having a problem with the motherboard bowing because of the heatsink, causing the ram to not connect properly even when it's clipped in. the error shows up 0.4 on this led screen in there. The ram is 512 mb kingston drr400:

aha, fixed it! it was the damn heatsink on too tight bowing the mobo ever so slightly, causing the RAM to not connect properly in the center.
