When are games going to be burned to DVDs only, dammit!

I say that because it it being far too common now that games are on more than two CDs and purchasing a DVD drive isn't too pricey (they are as low as 20 bucks on pricewatch.com). All the consoles use DVDs for storage so I can't see why the PC industry can't start using DVDs as the main standard. Anyone else feel this way or do you guys think that CDs should still be the standard for now?

I think we'll see more games being released in multiple CD format and DVD format concurrently. Like UT2k4.

I don't think we'll be seeing the back of CDs anytime soon. Most games are still managing to squeeze onto 2 CDs, and there seems little point alienating all those gamers who don't have a DVD drive. Are there any statistics on DVD drive deployment - can you still get high end PCs without them?

Wasn't DX:IW DVD-only?

I say release the game in both formats.

Yes, both formats... but when I get a DVD drive then there's no problem anymore [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I would say put them all on DvD. I think that if you don't own a dvd drive, you can forgo your next game for a while and buy a dvd drive for $20-$30.

The University of North Carolina has finally found a network server that, although missing for four years, hasn't missed a packet in all that time. Try as they might, university administrators couldn't find the server. Working with Novell Inc., IT workers tracked it down by meticulously following cable until they literally ran into a wall. The server had been mistakenly sealed behind drywall by maintenance workers.

Let's see, about... one night :P

I SERIOUSLY hope they start putting games on DVDs. This billions of CD crap is pissing me off. Check out a few of my favorite games...

KotOR - 4 discs
Unreal Tournament 2004 - 6 discs
Splinter Cell - 3 discs
Baldur's Gate 2 - 4 discs
Neverwinter Nights + Expansions: 6 discs

5 games, 23 discs. I think it's time DVDs took over, what with DVD read drives being dirt-cheap anyways...

It'll start happening, first with concurrent releases, like UT2k4, but you won't see DVD only for a few years yet. There are still a good number of poeple without DVD drives or still use old, slow ones, that won't meets specs

Software companies can't force you to buy new hardware and expect to get great results. According to Maximum PC, only about 30% of all computer users have a DVD-ROM drive in their computers, and as such, it doesn't make practical sense to convert formats yet. It will probably be within the next 10 years though.

In other news, alpha, wtf? No. Blu-Ray won't be widely available for 10-20 years. That's how long it took DVD, and CD even. Besides, games are going to have to eventually shrink in size. They're going to come out with better processors and GPUs which will be able to easily handle decompressing textures as you walk through areas, thus making the filesize for games WAY smaller. kkrieg, the 100kb game is just an example. Sure, it's nothing REALLY pretty, but look at the lighting implementation, the textures...it doesn't run well on today's hardware, but in a generation or two, things like that are going to be popping up more and more.

2004 was released in multi-CD and DVD here... actually, there was the 6CD, 1 DVD and 2 DVD with special stuff.

10 years? By that time, there will be a new medium out there that will replace the DVD thus software companies will be starting to migrate to said medium. And with the rate software is growing in size, we'll be seeing multiple DVDs.

Let's not forget that the transition from floppys to CDs wasn't ten years either. I think it was more like 3-5 years. Also, the transition from non-3d accelerated to 3d acceleration wasn't that short either.

Floppies to CD's was a huge transition. What are you talking about? CD's came out in the mid-80s, and only in mid 90s became widely available. I estimate that we won't NEED humongolous storage because nowadays, it pays more to have faster, smaller, more useful software, than it does to have big bloated useless software. And mediums PAST DVD? Maybe. But not in 10 years will they be scrambling. Blu-Ray is 54 gigs max--by that time that'll STILL be more than enough.

I said within 10 years giving heed to blu-ray technology. You have to consider how many people own computers vs. how many people have DVD drives. They won't force a conversion until that 30% is more like 80%.
