Is this why my eyelid is twitching?

Tell me how I can force myself awake to get work done if you've got any hints that don't involve eyeball spasms.

Cheers.

Adderall does it for most university students all over the world.

Wow, I thought much dirtier thoughts when I first read the topic.

I usually go with energy drinks, but they have their problems. The sugar and caffeine can result in a pretty hard crash, not to mention the jitters and lack of concentration (obviously it varies from person to person). I'm open to suggestions for better methods (preferably over-the-counter).

Go to sleep for like an hour.

Trust me. Even though you'll have an hour less to do what it is you need to do, you will be like twice as productive as if you hadn't slept at all.

first all-nighter doesn't require anything, second probably requires a caffeine drink or two.

Yeah me too. You'd think he'd have blisters or at least be in a world of pain...

Mmm, coffee. I think I'll make some now! As for suggestions, I find keeping the temperature low helps me to stay awake.

I generally rely on ridiculous amounts of caffeine and nicotine. Although, I find that if I drink Dr. Pepper, or something with less caffeine than coffee or Mountain Dew, I'll get the effect of the caffeine, without the jitters. Plus, you don't have to drink it all before it gets cold. Getting up at times helps, walk back and forth a little bit, go outside for a smoke, keeps you focused.

My biggest problem is generally surfing the web when I should be writing a paper, because that just strains my eyes more. And I know, because I'm writing one right now.

Coffee for me. I listen to music too. I normally switch between black metal and dynamic instrumentals. Both stimulate my brain rather well it seems. Kansas - Leftoverture is my best paper-writing album.

I know a lot of people that have a big problem writing to music (especially black metal), myself included. I can listen to some Romantic and ambient music, if it's turned low, it helps me relax, but anything else just distracts me.

i find that beer sometimes helps but by about 8am the quality of work goes down and tiredness goes up.

I just try not to stay awake much longer than will leave me with 4-5 hours of sleep. And I'll drink a cup of coffee in the morning. I'd rather go into a test more alert, than having studied everything and been left catatonic.

It's crazy how many people actually use adderall, though. My brother was on that for ADD, and eventually refused to take it any more, because he said he didn't feel like himself.

I've never used any kind of stimulant to aid studying because i'm a super huge hardcore badass in that fashion

It changes your personality after prolonged use--all amphetamines do. There's been studies where they notice a marked difference in the frontal lobe after prolonged use/exposure.

I generally get my work done in good time...leaving it until the night before either results in me going to sleep during the day (putting me on a screwed-up daytime sleep cycle) or staying up all day and just feeling awful.

I find that staying up for around 30 hours is just about the most terrible feeling in the world.

It is most unsettling, I agree.

I've had to pull a few all-nighters this semester to get various assignments done.. I use Bawls or quad-shot espresso drinks; either one does the trick.

Am I the only one who sees a problem with universities weighing us down with so much work that it becomes necessary to do stuff like this?
2006-12-17, 10:33 PM #21
Obviously I don't know the details of your school, but the few all-nighters I've had to pull have been due to me leaving assignments to the last minute. When I manage my time properly, stuff gets done on time without a big hassle.

Agreed. It's almost always my own fault. The only exception to this would be odd occurrences where, for example, three assignments/midterms all take place on the same day.

It's difficult to manage time properly when in the first semester you don't get any work, then you suddenly get a year's worth of work in the last 4 weeks of the second.

Also, when I write essays whilst doing all-nighters I tend to get good marks, I apparantly have quite an interesting writing style in these situations.

Definitely. I've never had to pull an all-nighter.

Ah yes, I pulled one of those playing WC3 back on June 5th/6th. I was 40 minutes away from 36 hours. No caffiene was involved aside from one can of Pepsi though.
I had a blog. It sucked.
