This is just a little gloating for my end of semester successfulness.

First, a little background info. My English Comp I teacher is really cool, only paper assignments for his class, although not a lot of them. Anyway, students do as they do, and procrastinate. Halfway into the semester and lots of people still hadn't started the first paper, when we were just moving on to the third paper. So the teacher says forget the first paper, but if you completed it already, it counts as the paper you would have had to do to get the A in the class, so really you only have to do the B paper if you want a higher grade than a C. I was actually the only one in my particular class that had completed the first paper on time.

So after doing all the other papers (albeit a little late on the last ones) and after taking the department mandated "C Test" (which was pointless crap anyway) the teacher sends me the assignment notes to the do the actual "B Paper" or the "A Paper" if I wanted to. All his other students in his other class had the same choice. So after picking the A paper (if you recall the thread I made a couple days ago) I found that it was a lot harder than it seemed. So after working on it Saturday night and little Sunday (the last day I had to e-mail it in), I came to the conclusion that there was no way to make this paper to be 1000 words, as I had said all I could say and it was only at about 650. So I send it to him anyway and explain that I just did not have the time to fully complete it, and I should not have procrastinated the last few papers, but oh well.

Today, he e-mailed me back and said because I was the only student out of ALL his classes that even picked the actual A paper instead of going for the easier B paper, that he passed me with an A in the class anyway. :D

I guess I got an A for effort. :)

I also got a B in my US History class, and an A or a B in my Intro to Philosophy class.

So, post your grades if you know em.

I got 2 As for one class that was cancelled this trimester. An A in world geography because I was the only one to finish the work on time. A W in Violin(which I had never heard about or known I was taking.. W means Withdrawal apparently, not that that clarifys at all). A B+ In english, which is the easiest class ever.. I go to a coffee shop, get coffee, then go to the beach and write 1 paragraph once a week. Thats it. And then theres an A- in Guitar, which was another easy class. I <3 alternative education.

Avenger, you are awesome. I think I told you that already.

Next time I get a chance I'm taking the certification test to become a certified first responder
(I passed the class months ago but with school, I haven't had time to go take the test), and next semester is my fire suppression systems class.

This last semester...let's not discuss this last semester.

The only mark I've gotten back so far (having just finished my first semester at University) is a 2.1 from my first essay. The annoying thing is that I could've gotten a first on it, but I forgot to include a reference section. Stupid mistake, but I blame it on never having to have done that at A level so I just forgot about it :o Still, it's only the first year, so it doesn't count for anything as long as I pass.

I've also handed in a research report for Psychology and a couple of short essay questions (totalling 2000 words) for my Sociology module, but I won't find out how I did on those until I go back early January. That's also when my first exams are.

You forgot to include a reference section?

In essays i've done the references took longer than the actual writing, I usually need about 50 good references.

Like I said, it was something we never had to do at A level. Obviously I used references in the text, but I wasn't aware that we had to fully reference them all in a separate section of the essay. This was early on in the semester, though. I've learned my lesson since then.

I don't get grades any longer, I just have my adviser constantly looking over my shoulder asking me why I haven't finished my analysis yet and/or I have to talk to him each week and point out something worth while I did the week before.

(I'm doing a phd if anyones curious, you think its great when you first start, no more exams, getting paid to study, but bugger if the work load goes through the roof)

When you drop a class, you can drop up until a certain date and it won't show on your record. After that date, they put the W on your record. It usually means you dropped the class later in the semester/quarter/etc, and that the person who dropped the class might not have been doing well.

Seeing as the Applied Music Lab is only for CR/NCR and not for an actual grade... And is also worth 0 actual credit hours...

I'm still really surprised by JudgeDredd's original post. I've never been in a class where no one except one person did an assignment on time. Now, I've been in plenty where people turned in subpar assignments, but late? I don't understand why this class is really that big of a deal. I'd pull an allnighter and turn in a crappy paper before I would turn it in late, and if I turned in a paper late it'd be asap.

Further, what was the A paper assignment? Am I wrong in thinking that 1000 words is about 3 pages double spaced (times new roman 12)? That just doesn't seem so bad from the little detail in the original post.

I'm still waiting for all my grades. If my professors would stop now, I would have a 4.0, but only three of my grades are in so far, and none are surprising A's. I'm pretty certain I got a B-B+ in one of the remaining classes, but the rest should be ok.

^Yeah, likewise. 1000 words is nothing. 650 words is barely anything. What surprises me the most is that the professor would just drop an assignment that people decided not to do.

Not everyone didn't do the first paper. Just a lot of people. So yeah, since so many people were behind he just kind of dropped it for C grade requirement, and made it the A paper for those people that had done it. My particular class was big in the beginning, more than 20 people, then slowly lost people. By the ending weeks of the semester there were really only about 5 people in the class.

As far as that paper, like I said, I just did not have the time to fully stretch it. In the time I had, I just couldn't think of any ways to elaborate without sounding repetitive. The A paper was a memo format paper where I had to persuade the teacher to give me an A, and list three ways it would benefit the teacher only and not me. Then, recognize objections from other students about giving me an A just for writing the [pretend] memo, then say why those objections are unfounded/unrealistic. For the amount of time I put into it I did pretty good for ~650 words. Apparently all the other students went for the B paper, which was a 1000 word memo persuading a higher up in your business/company about a particular decision or something. You got to make up the problem, then persuade against it or for it or whatever.

I should mention this is just English Comp I in a community college. This is one of the first classes a student would have to take coming into this college after coming out of high school. So naturally it's not taken seriously. Having done all the papers, the 1st one was actually the hardest. You had to pick three out of five articles to critically analyze. It involved three drafts:

Quote:
2. In your first draft you should state as succinctly as possible the author’s overall conclusion. In addition I want you to summarize the two or three main arguments the author uses to support her conclusion.
3. In your second draft I want you to add a second paragraph to each summary evaluating the article’s reliability. This doesn’t mean I want you tell me whether or not you agree with it or think the information is true. I want you to demonstrate a basic understanding of the principles of evaluation.
4. In your final draft I want you to explore at least one assumption the author makes that you believe is critical to assessing the article. I want you to tell me whether or not (and why) s/he justifies her assumption. I want you to add this to the beginning of each summary’s evaluation (2nd) paragraph.

Not to mention the articles were a hard read. I wasn't too phased by it, but I can see how other people coming right out of a public learning system could find this difficult.

Experimental Particle Physics,

I should be popping out to CERN sometime next year to spend 6-12months helping in the search for the Higgs Boson amongst other things. The area I'm working on at the minute is using the Semi-Leptonic decay of tt-bar (one top quark and one anti-top quark) to help reduce the error on the measurement of the Top quark mass. This should help in the search for the Higgs (if it exists) by reducing the error on the searches for the Higgs on various Top quark channels.
