For those of you who haven't checked your Wii lately, it should be glowing right about now! Download the update from Nintendo and enjoy your weather!
Think while it's still legal.

Not that this isn't important, but do you scour the Internet all day just looking for anything new about the Wii to post here? :P

Pretty pointless feature if you ask me.
2006-12-19, 10:40 AM #7
Not really. A Wii is much more affordable than a comp.
2006-12-19, 10:43 AM #8
A TV with local weather is much more affordable than the Wii ;)
2006-12-19, 10:45 AM #9
It doesn't do **** for me if it's just local and I'm making travel plans. ;)
2006-12-19, 10:59 AM #10
A library is much more affordable than any of the above, so stuff it.

wink at me, will ya?

If your local weather channel doesn't do a nationwide [limited] forecast, then you deserve to have your travel plans disrupted!!! ;)

Yeah. If I'm using a Wii, it's because I'm playing games. If I want to know the weather, I'll look at my computer, the T.V., or I'll just look outside.

Yeah I don't get this whole weather thing either. Why would I open my video game system to check the weather?

What I get even less is that it's plastered all over all the technology news sites like it's some big important thing. Pfft.

Or, he found out when his system starting glowing, kind of like he said in his post.

I like the globe spinny thing in the forecast channel. Now I want Google Earth for Wii!

Also, I thought the weather channel was supposed to display the current temperature at the channel screen? That would be a lot cooler.

Yeah, the glow actually woke me up, sort of. I ran the update and fell back asleep.

Um right, so, I just saw a thread on digg.com which mentions that some games use the current weather in your region to control in-game weather. For example, the football game looks up the current weather at the place you are playing and puts it in game.

The feature is useful, after all.

Wouldn't it be awesome (in a comedic way) if games could be rained out? So Jimmy decides to play NFL2006, or whatever, because it's raining outside.. and the game won't let him.. because it's raining.

So if there's a tropical storm outside I'll see cars and debris flying over the field while my big burly barbaric guys ram each other over a pigskin?

In my opinion, that feature is gimmicky and completely useless whether it IS used by games or not. As if a randomized weather system couldn't do the job. Besides, if it was raining outside, I personally wouldn't want to be playing in the rain on my console.

I think the more time goes by, the more the wii feels like a gimmick and the more I feel that it will die a quick painful death. I'm starting to seriously feel like in a few months or a year, no one but fanbois will really care for the console itself. The majority will be bored with waving their hands around.

With that said, through and through, its a nice party console with excite truck and wii sports.

You'll also see flying cows if there's a tornado warning in your area.

Funny. I don't remember anyone complaining about consoles incorporating a system clock, and they have about the same practical applications within a game as the weather channel.

No, clocks are more useful.

You try remembering which one of your 17 Metal Gear game saves is the most recent without a timestamp.

Gimmicky as it is, it's here to stay. I imagine it'll do at least as well as the Gamecube.

That is exactly how I feel about the Wii right now, plus I am feeling more and more compelled to buy a 360. And I couldn't be happier with the GameCube I bought on Nov. 19. Resident Evil 4 was amazing.

Oh I'm not saying it'll die and no games will be made for it. I did not say this was the next Dreamcast.

What I'm saying is that once the hype die down, you wont be hearing much from it. It wont get the media coverage (or interest) that its getting now and I'd bet that most developpers who want to make a quality product will aim for the more powerful consoles. From there I wouldn't be surprised of course to see more popular non-exclusive titles be downscaled to the Wii and have the wiimote controls implemented.

One thing I'm expecting is a whole slew of kiddy games to come out for the wii. (Tickle me with a stick Elmo anyone?)

While I'm being critical of the Wii, I'm not saying its a poor machine. I've enjoyed quite a few games with my buddies, but even with that, I don't believe in its long term durability.

I've noticed that something like 50% of the games available for the Wii are based on movies or cartoons that suck. :(

Same, didn't SSX or the Sims for Wii became "kiddified" in terms of its graphic style? I think the Wii is good, but the worshipping and the overhype is very annoying to me.
