Html Thumbnailing Software
2004-07-09, 11:37 PM #1
So my friend is working on her webpage, and wants to add a section to it, which would involve a lot of thumbnails and such [for the Sims if it makes a difference].

She has been eyeing this program, which seems to have numerous bells and whistles, however is nearly 30$. However the concept seems really basic, and i am almost certain i recall hearing about similar programs for free or even maybe one that somoene here had written, though i do not recall precisely.

Basically it feeds on a directory and spews out thumbnails of all the images therein, along with pages for each of the full-size images, and a page with all the thumbnails on it with various customization or options [open in new window or same or popup sort of things]. As well as allowing for templates to be used and customized for the output pages.

Any input on things that would do all that and be pretty easy to use and such would be appreciated?

If you like the command line try:

http://www.imagemagick.org/

If you like a more GUI try:

http://www.irfanview.com/

I know Photoshop CS will do create excellent thumbnail galleries but thats a little overkill for what you are doing. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Would you mind posting some information on how one would go about doing the above with irfanview? Ideally in an itemized list using words of one syllable or less [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I don't think ifranview will make an HTML page. You can do batch processing to generate thumbnails though (file/batch I think).

Once you have that, it's fairly trivial to write a small php or perl script that allows you to navigate the images.

If that's too much work, run a search on hotscripts.com or freshmeat.net for php or perl scripts that can do the same thing. Many "photo galleries" have the capabilities that you are talking about.

1)Open IrfranView.
2)Press the "t" key on the keyboard.
3)The thumbnail browser window should now be on the screen. Use the browser to select the pictures you want.
4)click file->save selected thumbs as an HTML page.

Adobe Photoshop Elements should do all of that. It will at least batch process a lot of thumbnails, and I'm pretty sure it will make you an html page too.

I wouldn't recommend buying it, but I would recommend dow.....*******

A bit overkill to download a huge program just to have a simple task done?

Thanks, Irfanview does seem to do a very good job of thumbnailing, at that.

Having the ability to use templates or have more control codewise over the output sheets would be grand, but that's not too difficult to do with some batchwork in editplus or something.

Still open to other suggestions, but this should do a decent if un-flattering job of it (:

ABOUT GFXINDEX
This is a small program that generates indices of your pictures by creating thumbnails (mini versions of the pictures) and a set of HTML-files. It's somewhat configurable.</font>

Guess it's been too long since I used windows/irfanview [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] Sounds like a good solution, and I bet there is a config file you can muck around with somewhere that will act as a template, but that's just a guess.

There's a PHP script that does just that.

I forget where it is, but it's easily findable via google.
