Surely everyone remembers the Lego chaingun that was posted here a while back; well, at the insistance of a certain member of these forums I have built my own. Now it isn't quite so good as the one I based it off of; I didn't have enough parts to make 8 barrels, or even 6 (which is what I was going for). So it only has three barrels. Also it has a relatively poor rate of fire (maybe 2 or 3 per second) and it's rather flimsy. And I couldn't be bothered to build a proper trigger for it so it fires when you slide a piece up on the back. And it's not tripod-mounted.

BUT IT WORKS.

NEWS FLASH: I looked again and I *may* have enough parts to make another 3 barrels. This will double the capacity and the rate of fire. I'll put them together tomorrow and take a video of it then because right now I'm going to see a movie.

Three more barrels would add loads the the coolness factor. Any idea of the rate of fire on that thing right now?

You know, I bet my ISD set has more than enough pieces to build a good minigun...

looks a bit rail-det-ish now ;)

Okay so I got the other three barrels built and hooked on, but I was having some trouble with the return time of the escape mechanism not being fast enough to prevent it from firing two or three elastics at once so I had to add springs... crappy hack I know but it does do the trick. Of course now the motor gets bogged down because of the extra load now so I'm going to have to add another motor and/or change the gearing (which was pretty substandard to begin with). Also the extra weight is now too much for the motor tower so it's sagging and causing extra friction as well. So I've got my work cut out for me.

But let me just say, watching it spin up and unleash a stream of elastic bands at ~6 rounds per second is the most beautiful thing ever.

Eh? I'm thinking Megabricks are too bulky for this sort of construction.

Okay I updated the gearing, completely rebuilt the structure that holds the spinny piece, and mounted it on a pan/tilt base.

Also I took a video of it in action, but the video sucks because it's from a cheap digital camera. You can't actually see the elastics that it fires; it's too dark and grainy, but at least you can watch it spinning I guess. I'll see about maybe getting some better video tomorrow.

Man, that sure does spin. Does it have a motor? And too bad we can't see the elastics -- how many can it carry?

[edit]
looked at the previous pics, and I can see it does have a motor. But my other question still stands.

   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kb89ea4wd20

EDIT: It works reliably with up to 6 elastics per barrel, but I've had it up to 10 per barrel before. Which sometimes messes up. So 36 - 60 I guess.

Coolness. How about a video where you're shooting figures or blocks or something? With something as cool as that it seems like a waste not to destroy something.
