So, he has enough money for an old helicopter jet turbine, but not enough money for a good car?

Yeah, why anyone would go to all that trouble to put a rocket in a crappy car is beyond me. The new Beetles have one of the worst breakdown rates of any car on the road.

He should have put that rocket engine in a classic mini...

Guys, he put a jet engine in a car. I don't think breakdowns will be a problem for him.

The car won't be useful if its primary engine is disabled. It might have the capacity to be cool in special situations without a traditional engine. I think it'd matter if the primary engine broke down if you need the car for transportation. Otherwise, perhaps not (if you could find a way to tow it to a suitable location for rocket propulsion).

I *hate* the jet powered beetle. As a Geek Squad Agent, we hear about it time and time again on our forums as new members join. The thing has been around FOREVER. Ugh...

I wouldn't be as proud as he is.

The lack of giant wide wheels to get the power onto the road and big brakes to stop the thing makes me think he's found a very expensive way of burning jet fuel, and not much else.

Doesn't impress me, we were supposed to have flying cars already in 2000.

Damn you Americans are nuts.

This sounds like folksvaggen fanboyism at its worst more than a dream machine engineering. The smart thing to do would be to push against the road, not waft air. The modified jet engine was even a turboshaft to begin with. He probably wouldn't invest in a custom drivetrain and grippy tires because he thinks the automotive aftermarket 'can't German engineer it's way out of a paper bag.'
