Your Dream House
2006-12-28, 5:28 PM #1
Post what you want your dream house to be like.

For myself, I would like the following to be in my dream house:

- Many secret passages including:
A hidden study located behind a revolving bookcase.
A hollowed out drink machine with a ladder inside that leads to the basement.
A passage that leads from the basement to a well outside that has a ladder in it.
A staircase hidden behind a fullbody mirror that leads to the attic.

- A hidden floor between the ground floor and the second floor that is only about 3 feet in height and can only be accessed by a dumwaiter.

- An attic with a surveillance station consisting of camera and audio feedback.

- A large hedgemaze outside with a small shack in the middle that is locked. Inside the shack is a ladder that leads down to a room that houses a vault.
Who made you God to say "I'll take your life from you"?

Take Every Man's room from Home Improvement and put it in one giant house.

Then proceed to add the maze, hidden passages [One must be behind a fireplace] etc.

I would also like a lift in the house that had one button to a mystery floor that is actually in a completely different building to confuse guests.
nope.

I'd want a totally scaled house that was perfect for my size, including scaled items and objects. This would be attached to a dream home for the rest of my family that I couldn't even begin to list here.

My dream home would be awesome.

A true Dymaxion house. That would be awesome.

A nice house with beach access and a private dock/boatramp in a well protected harbor. Or a cabin out in the woods.

A medium-small sized house (2 or 3 bedrooms) off in the woods. There must be a windy, hilly road to get there. It either needs to be near the ocean or in the mountains (somewhere in the pacific northwest, you'll never get me to move outa the pacific northwest).

It can be small as long as it has at least 2 bedrooms, that would be ideal. It can have a small kitchen with dining table and living room, thats everything I could ever need. It does, however, need a small tower.

Preferably, the living room, dining table (or room), and kitchen should be on the first floor. Two bedrooms on the second floor, one with a large bed facing a wall of windows, and outside a good view.

The third "floor" can be the tower. Just a continuation of a spiral staircase into a small round room with bookshelves, a couch and a desk. There needs to be four windows in the tower, evenly spaced around the circular walls. There should be one or two skylights in the conical ceiling. That would be the perfect room...

Open plan living. Literally.

My dream home is circular and has no walls at all, except for a suport pillar in the middle that holds up the roof and also houses the facilities. The rest of the house is hardwood floors with rugs, and completely open. One room, or more appropriately 'area', flows into the next. Obviously it would have to be set in a tropical environment where the temperature is always perfect and weather is not an issue. A private island, maybe.

Er, why should the climate matter? Domes are incredibly easy to heat and cool.

Somewhere, I have drawn out plans for a three (maybe 4, can't remember) story house (with roof and sub-level) on an island, completely with helipad, sub bay, as well as elevator-tunnel access to shore and a boathouse. The house itself has a large VR room, indoor paintball / laser tag arena, a huge entertainment room, etc.

Hard to heat the outside.

I actually liked Bill Gate's house somewhat.

Out in the forest, lots of glass walls, on the side of a mountain (Certain parts of the house would go into the mountain, like a basement, then shoot out), marble and dark wood throughout, except for dining area and bedrooms which would have bright carpet.

For landscape, I'd like to tie in an open stone structure with water, that sorta matches the marble in the house. I am a sucker for waterfalls and running water in general, so if there was any way to tie that into the house, I would.

That, and a neat little idea I always wanted to try: A big staircase railing made of glass, hollow, with live fish inside! Probably would be a railing for an entrance to the house, like a wide open set of stairs.

A medium sized, well designed, explosion proof mansion.

Underground garage with a camaflaque elevator that rises out of my lawn.

Tall stone walls with those elegeant, sharp, pointy, and black style fencing things at the top.

Oh, and enough space to throw hand grenades around for fun.

And ghosts.

That's actually a pretty cool idea. I'd like to see it done somewhere, maybe some children's science museum or something.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Well, one of my ideas would be a mansion-like place on top of some really tall cliff with an elevator shaft down to ground level. It would be quite near some city too.

Yet I know that I want to have some kind of a fully sound proof own private movie theatre/studio too. That could be quite useful.

It should be made out of LEGO blocks, so I can rebuild it as I see fit.

Watch Clue.

Then you'll have it.

(Including the butler. I need someone to buttle.)

Yeap, there's no walls, windows, or doors at all, so the temperature it is outside will be the temperature it is inside.

5 stories. The outside is made out of steel, with some sort of black ornate wood carvings over it. The inside is winding, twisting, and crazy. There's rooms made entirely of mirrors, floors on the ceilings, the kitchen is completely vertical, the whole place is riddled with secret passage ways, ornate carvings, paintings with the eyes cut out, hidden elevators, the works.
There's several gothically inspired towers and flying buttresses along the outside from which someone can survey the entire area. The foundations of the house stretch down deep into the bowels of the earth, deeper than most mine-shafts, and the entire subterranean complex is filled with vaults and laboratories that I rent out to mad scientists in order to afford this house.
The "entire area" consists of hundreds of acres of greasy black tarn, old willow tree groves (preferably that share a common root system so they're actually the same tree) and a vast fountain/statue that surrounds the house and functions as the driveway. It would be massive, with many various streams and spouts and artificial waterfalls and such. There would ideally be someplace deep within the house where you could put poison or some highly flammable liquid into the fountain system in order to surprise guests.
Obviously, this house is in the midst of some abandoned valley somewhere, with a forest not far away. Some armed guards may be necessary.

-Basically, the House of Usher + Rose Red + Hillhouse. Also, a bit of the mansion from RE.

It would be secluded, and have a big wall around it to keep you guys out. A big wall with guard towers. And machine guns. And search lights. And dogs. Mean dogs. Scary dogs. And a moat. With alligators. And barbed wire. Lots of barbed wire. And spikes. And landmines. Lots of landmines. And lasers. And another moat. With pirhanas. And sky monsters. Scary monsters. With big teeth. And another moat. Of molten rock. And sharp claws. And you guys aren't allowed to come in.

The bathrooms would be stainless steel and they would have automatic washers in them. Sort of like the inside of a dishwasher. That way, I would never have to clean a bathroom again.

It would turn into an ice box in the winter, though.

Sweet, more beer storage than you could ever need.

Not with the radiant floor heating. Did I forget to mention that? ;)

Forget dual, ever seen those showers that have an array of heads on either side of you? I don't know if they have a name for those, in my head I call them "body blasters".

I want dual shower heads so two people can shower at once. Not because I need more water being splashed on me.

Brian, no matter how nice your house is I still won't shower with you.

I want to live in a snazzy villa. Either a Roman equestrian villa, or a columbian drug-lord villa. Either one will do nicely. It would have pillars and surround an open garden with a nice fountain. Perhaps a small pool inside pool, also with pillars, would be a nice addition.

A big house complete with a Library of epic porportions, a fancy dining hall, like 8 bathrooms, 8 bedrooms, theater, etc. Must be built like old victorian mansions. Gothic architechture also acceptable. Must be out in the woods, preferably out in the mountains. 15 minutes driving time away from a town, far enough to not be bothered, but not far enough for it to be a hassle.

Must have lots of secret passages. Secret passages must all lead to one secret central room, and that central room must also itself have a secret passage in the floor into a room where I would store my valuables. Also, there must be a passage behind a fireplace.

Also, ghosts. Seriously, what mansion isn't complete without its fair share of ghosts? I'm thinking like 2 or 3 of them you know. No demons though, I do not want to have regular exorcisms performed on the house.
2006-12-29, 2:23 PM #36
All this talk of a fireplace passage way reminds me of the level in Thief were you follow the assassins back and then rob the mansion that has all the secret passage ways, including stuff behind paintings and the fireplace tunnel. That would be pretty sweet.

I'm an architect, and thus I will have a house complete in every variety of personalized and custom asskickery available. That is of course not referring to frivolities of appliance and technology.

Will there be ghosts?

I can't say much about the rest of the house, but you can bet it would have dumbwaiters in it. And secret passages. And then even more secret passages.
