New Computer!

Just got all the parts today and assembled it with very little trouble (I put the power switch connector on backwards :saddowns: )

Anyway:

600W PSU
NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel 2.13 GHz Core 2 Duo
4 Gb RAM
2 DVD writer optical drives
Floppy Drive
500GB Western Digital SATA Hard Drive
eVGA GeForce 8800GTS

I'd be posting from it right now, but my Knoppix live cd doesn't recognize the onboard network card on the motherboard :(

Beats the crap out of mine!

Why two DVDRWs..?

because they were less than $30, and it helps because I don't want to have to constatly change disks to play different games. (Just keep Morrowind in one and another game in the other, for example) and for direct cd copying.

[EDIT] By the Way, the 8800 is huge, it's over half a foot long (over 15cm) and about an inch thick (2.54 cm) with the fan[/EDIT]

I had a blog. It sucked.

Hope everything works out well--the parts list seemed fine to me. We'll have to give her a test run sometime. If you want I can swing by with FarCry and other ****.

It'll be awhile since I don't have a permanant OS on it yet, just linux live CD's at the moment (unless I can get my hands on a copy of XP home).

Otherwise Vista will be the OS for it.

4GB RAM was a waste, Windows only really uses 2GB.

I don't think it will be if he upgrades to Vista. Isn't Vista supposed to be very memory intensive?
2006-12-30, 2:12 PM #10
No, I mean, windows doesn't use the RAM, period. Even if it's there, it won't use it. It'll recognize it, but that's about all.

Vista will, and he's planning on getting it. So...no.

Vista will only use that much memory in Business and Ultimate. Soooo... But I agree, if he upgrades along that path, it won't be a waste.

Well, I'm pretty sure our local college is part of the MSDNA so he can get business for like 10bux. Pretty sure, not positive.

Well, there you go then! :) You should be able to easily get the only real viable option for the Vista OS (Ultimate) from a university as well.

Yeah, I'm gonna see if one of my friends can get me ultimate on the cheap, since he's in Graphic Design...dunno if that's counted as a "computery" enough major to get vista cheapsies.

The college might only have Business on MSDNAA. Our admin has so far only receieved Business. He doesn't handle the actual frontend (website), but already has the image files and a set of keys, or key gen (legit), or whatever it is they use. I've already got a copy of Business (he's letting people email him and he'll send them a key and burn the discs if they want, I just copied my friend's discs that got them this way), waiting to install it though, I want to see if Ultimate goes up. Even if it doesn't, once it's on the MSDN site I can at least get a second copy of Business for my desktop, which is better than nothing (first copy is going on my laptop).

I'm planning on getting Ultimate, so further bickering about RAM usage and whatnot can cease, thank you.

Even if I can't get it through the college here, it's not like it's unbeneficial to get ultimate for it's price, since I'll be using it for quite awhile.

Hmmm... my computer is becoming somewhat outdated I suppose. Oh well, at least I still have plenty of hard drive space right?
