Satellite gaming solutions??!!

First off, I hope this is the right forum. I figured I'd get more responses here than the tech forum plus this isn't to do with any of the things listed under the tech forum (it's not a language or prgram, it's asking for some suggestions and input from others concerning a problem), and I need them fast or else the games will all be finished before I can play any. Please understand admins, and if you must intervene, please move this thread and not close it. Thankyou.

Please though, somebody help me. I would love to paly Jedi Knight with SAJN and everyone, but I can't even do it with graphics on 640x480 and ABSOLUTELY NO programs running in the background without ping over 1,000. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

I have Direcway satellite service and I usually get fast page views and download speeds of 150 kbs. I also have a wireless connection though a wireless NetGear router above my room, which transmits from a hub to all the pcs in my house. LAN games run smooth and fine for me. Any suggestions, solutions, or alternatives are greatly appreciated! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Satellite is fine for browsing but sucks for gaming because you get nice and fast downstream speeds but very slow upstream, or so I remember someone telling me a few years back.

From what I've heard, wireless slows down the speed of your modem quite a bit compared to a non-wireless connection. Also, I've heard that satelite connections aren't that great either for gaming. I don't think I can help you beyond that.

The problem is, the information has to go up to the satelite and back with each packet, and that's quite a distance to travel. I don't know how much you rally can do, you're going to get substancial lag no matter what.

Satellite connections suffer from high latency because the information has such a long way to travel. Works the same as satellite television. If you turn on two TV's, one using satellite and one using cable, to the same station, you'll notice a couple second delay in the satellite one.

It's pretty much impossible to make any game playable on satellite, after all, dialup has much lower latency. Even MMORPGs are really awful on satellite connections.

Basically, that's fine for anything not very dependant on latency like web browsing and file downloading, but you might as well give up gaming with it.

[http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] I still managed to get 8 kills though. Do you know if I could temporarily disable it and use dialup? I would cut my ping by two thirds most likely. I'm having about 1,500 at teh moment.

Alright, 2 possible questions/solutions:

1) Could I enable dial-up with a satellite connection at no extra charge?

2) Would me hosting a game decrease the lag I experience?

No, and no.

That is 1) No unless you already have a dialup account. 2)Not really.

I want to do an experiment, just because I'm desperate.

Here's a link to a default box I made quickly. No awards.

http://www.freewebs.com/vaderscorner/box.zip

If someone would kindly download that and then join a game hosted it 192.168.0.3 and ping me, I would be much obliged. The game is up now.

Well, you could take a free 30+ day trail from any of the given major ISPs... Unfortunately, I don't have a JK computer connected, so I can't help with your experiment...

That's your router IP. Go to www.whatismyip.com to get your real ip. Any IP starting with 192.168 is that of a router. Fun.

I can tell you right now it won't. If anything, you hosting will make it worse, because now EVERYONE will lag like mad. It is simply IMPOSSIBLE to play games on satillite.

The time it takes for a packet to travel all the way across the satillite is unbelievably long for gaming, and as such, it is useless.

Well. That makes me take my 56k over satellite anyday. I sometimes get a constant connection from my dial up so I can at least play online games. I can even play Jedi academy sometimes with no lag.
