Meh, ran out of HD space
2007-01-06, 8:47 PM #1
I ran out of HD space. I have a 40GB drive for my main operating system (linux) and another one for Windows 2000, which I only use for games. So I bought a Seagate 250GB drive.

I'm going to use this as an excuse to install from scratch Debian testing. I currently run it, and it's not exactly necessary, but I've been running this installation for years and I've foobard the kernel installation routine somewhat beyond my ability to fix it. I went from using the stock debian kernels to using a custom compiled one, and when I go back to the stock kernel now (2 yrs later), I get all sorts of weird things. And I don't want to keep compiling my own kernel because it's a pain in the ***.

So, hopefully this will help.

I'm posting because I'm waiting for the 180MB debian etch netinst cd to download. La la la

Seagates are wonderful.
2007-01-06, 8:57 PM #3
Only 180 megs? I heard that Vista used up most of DVD-.
2007-01-06, 8:58 PM #4
Its a net installer, it downloads the rest during install.

I suggest you use Ubuntu instead.

I considered that, but I don't use gnome or most of the other packages they give you, and when you strip it down, it's easier to just use debian.
2007-01-06, 10:40 PM #7
But I stupidly chose "desktop system" and it d/l and installed gnome anyway. I'm going to start over. Blah. I guess the new HD works, though ;)
2007-01-06, 10:44 PM #8
Haha I have more hard drive space than you.
Stuff
2007-01-06, 10:52 PM #9
Wow, I recently got myself down to two hard drives (160 GB for OS + programs, 320 GB for storage), and thought I was "roughing" it.
2007-01-06, 11:03 PM #10
My computer has six gigs. :P

I assume you don't use KDE either? Because if you do, Kubuntu would work.

I think it would be easier to strip down Ubuntu than it would be to implement things like Upstart (init replacement) and other fun things, if you care about them that is.

Hey Tracer, mine has 6, too. 6 hundred, ah hah hah...:v:

I think there's also a version that uses fluxbox, forget what it's called though. Maybe I'm just thinking of nUbuntu.
2007-01-07, 12:53 AM #13
I use icewm. It's really easy with debian, I just install the base system, then apt-get install icewm and xserver-xorg, do the configuration for xorg, then install the nvidia drivers, and it's all good. Takes a lot less time than installing ubuntu and then trying to figure out which of the thousands of packages to remove.

Yeah, I don't use THAT much hd space. The 40gb was mostly a bunch of backup stuff, photos from my wife's camera, and some games. It will be much nicer now.
2007-01-07, 2:09 AM #14
Aglar, Xubuntu uses Xfce.

Where are you getting the netinstall CD from that it's 180 megs? The ones I've found are only about 112MB.

[EDIT]Nevermind, forgot about different filesizes for different system types.[/EDIT]

fluxbox ftw

In other news... you seem to have a lot of issues with running out of disk space, Brian. *cough massassi server cough*

blah blah, that's because you people type too much and keep filling it up

actually it's the backups that are filling up the server, I just didn't write a cron to delete old backups :(

i just freed up about 60gb the other day. 232gb capacity and ive never had any space problems.

250gb Maxtor, I had 100 gb left before I reformatted. I also rarely uninstalled games. Now I have 214gb free, but the only game i have installed is Double Agent :P
I had a blog. It sucked.
2007-01-07, 11:26 AM #21
If you REALLY wanna know my HD then fine.
6 gig

The cool thing is is that it has never ever ever corrupted anything.
And due to the size i am constantly installing/uninstalling so its very suprising.
2007-01-07, 11:40 AM #22
Dude thanks for finally giving in to all that pressure and finally telling us your HD.

Be careful with that maxtor.

I've heard a lot of stories about the typical short lifespan of Maxtor drives.
2007-01-07, 1:36 PM #24
I have a 160gb maxtor and I've had it for over 3 years and it's still fine. I'm continually downloading/deleting large files. Hell, I often download 10+gb torrents of TV series onto it and delete them when i've finished watching them. The drive has probabably had at least a terabyte of different data on it (Probably quite a bit more)

Honestly I've heard equally bad stories about most other brands. I had a IBM Deskstar fail.. and years ago I had a quantam fireball fail.

I also have a 120gb Western Digital which I've also had for 3 years but mostly the data on it does not change drastically.

Hard drives have moving parts, they will fail. Maxtor may have had higher failure rates in the past, but I don't think it's an issue anymore.

IBM Deathstars are particularly bad though.
2007-01-07, 2:10 PM #27
I never had any hard drive fail. I guess I'm not doing enough on it.

Whenever I think of hard drive failures, I think of Sine Noman's Nar Shaddaa.

I just don't get how people can use up an entire 240GB hard drive. Even if you have a whole lot of large games and other programs such as CAD programs, i just dont see how one can fill up an entire hard drive. (this of course, assumes that you are not doing illegal downloads of high quality video)

I have a 160 for backup storage and whatnot, and a 250 for main storage. All my **** takes up all but like 10 gigs of the 250, but I'm in the process of moving things over to the 160. So I think I'll have about 150-160gigs free by the time all's said and done. It'll be nice :D

My 40GB filled with only a few games (quake 1/2/3/4, ut 1/2k3/2k4, doom 1/2/3) and a bunch of pictures my wife took. I have maybe 1gb of mp3s.

Are you kidding?
I just started filling up my new external 300 gig hd I got for christmas. I've currently got about 40 gigs taken up with a bunch of music, and a couple game backups. I'm certain that once I rip all of my games to the external it'll be at least 200 gb.

Also, the db of massassi (just the mysql db) is 1.4gb, compressed. We do nightly backups (for the most part). The levels area, geesh, I have no idea how big that is.
2007-01-08, 2:40 PM #34
I've got images, video clips, MP3s, and downloaded programs on my 250 GB hard drive. It's very easy to fill up a hard drive with completely-legal material.

Not that big I think. Cool Matty made a personal backup of it once, I think it was only a few hundred megs.

Time to start pruning some images from the DB. That is what is making up the lion's share of the db size.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.
